June 10th Fishing Report

A chance of showers and thunderstorms before 1pm, then showers likely and possibly a thunderstorm between 1pm and 4pm, then showers and thunderstorms likely after 4pm. Some of the storms could be severe. Increasing clouds, with a high near 86. Breezy, with a south wind 9 to 17 mph, with gusts as high as 28 mph. Chance of precipitation is 70%. New rainfall amounts between a quarter and half of an inch possible.

Humid, warm, and potential rain.  The recent rains have stained some creeks up, but only a couple remain unfishable as of this morning.  It’s a weird month weather wise…  The best fishing has been early in the morning, and later in the day when the sun is off the water.  Right before and immediately after the rains the fishing has been good too!

June 9th Fishing Report

Patchy fog before 8am. Otherwise, cloudy, then gradually becoming mostly sunny, with a high near 85. Light and variable wind.

Hot and humid day today.  Cloud cover yesterday and into early morning today had helped the fishing quite a bit, but the sun is going to pop out again later this morning and slow things down.

We have had a bit of rain recently that has put a good stain on some waters, and are forecasted for a bit more over the next few days.  So far, it is nothing too concerning except for the potential for localized thunderstorms in a valley or two.

Subsurface fishing is good on scuds, leeches, and even worm patterns in the cloudy water, and your normal perdigon style flies in the clear water.

On the surface, hippie stompers, small stimulators and other edible indicators are doing a good job holding bead heads up, and getting some fish to eat.  True, match the hatch dry fly fishing is best the last two hours of the day.

June 8th Fishing Report

Scattered showers and thunderstorms, then showers and possibly a thunderstorm after 10am. Some of the storms could produce heavy rainfall. High near 80. Southeast wind 3 to 8 mph. Chance of precipitation is 90%. New rainfall amounts between 1 and 2 inches possible.

Creeks are in great shape, and we will see what the rains do out there.  We will watch the radar and keep you posted, this is a much needed rain on the way!

Beetle/dropper, ants, and some lighter colored mayflies out there tonight.

New Winston Pure 7’9 5wt. Made for the Driftless!

It’s finally here!  Winston has been developing this rod for quite some time.  We will spare you the fancy marketing talk for now, but know that this is not your average 5 weight.  Incredible smoothness and a light feel while casting and fishing, it makes you think more of a 3 weight than your big, heavy western 5 weight rod.  This is not, however, a rod that will collapse with a stiff headwind, or while tossing a foam beetle and a dropper (or even a driftless sized mouse!).  With the ability to paint a small dry fly accurately on the water, but with the muscle to handle anything you will ever fish in the Driftless, this is one of the absolute best rods we have fished here in a very long time!

Quantities are limited early on, we are accepting backorders for this rod.  We have a couple in the shop right now, and more coming in the middle of June.  Pre orders qualify for free freight and free fly line.

Today is the drive in fly fishing show!

The weather forecast looks great compared to what we saw earlier this week.  No more rain in the forecast for our Drive In Fly Fishing Show in Richland Center today.  Doors open at 3, tickets will be available at the box office entrance.

Keep in mind there is some road construction going on at the theater entrance.  Travelling east, you can still use the left hand turn lane and drive over the gravel to get into the theater entrance.  Travelling west, go slowly and use some caution, you can sneak between the construction barrels and turn in.

Shop will be open 7-5 today.

June 5th Fishing Report

Scattered showers before 11am, then a slight chance of showers and thunderstorms after 5pm. Patchy fog before 8am. Otherwise, partly sunny, with a high near 83. Southwest wind 3 to 6 mph. Chance of precipitation is 40%. New rainfall amounts of less than a tenth of an inch, except higher amounts possible in thunderstorms.

Half an inch of rain last night was a good refresher, not enough to really change anything permanently, but a much needed soaking rain!  Creeks remain clear to slightly stained with temperatures in the low 60s.  It is time to start watching water temperatures.  Anything over 65 is going to be poor fishing.

Still seeing some fish sipping spinners in the morning, then quickly retreating to cover when the sun starts to shine on the water.  Casting a beetle with a bead head below it tight against the bank will get some fish out to play.  A handful of caddis dries are working, mostly in dark colors, and we are seeing some lighter colored mayflies later in the evenings as well.

June 3rd Fishing Report

Sunny, with a high near 82. Calm wind becoming south 5 to 9 mph in the morning.

Creeks are low and super clear with temperatures right around 60.  Some of the larger, slower moving creeks are getting surface temperatures that are in the mid 60s, we suggest avoiding fishing in water over 65 degrees.

Strange bug days are here.  We are still seeing rusty spinners in the very early morning, and some PMDs and Sulphurs in the very late evenings.  Sprinkle that with some caddis (Splitsville caddis in peacock!) during the day, and you have what’s on the menu.  If nothing is rising, using a large ground beetle with a Spanish bullet below will catch fish in the riffles, even in the bright sun.

June 2nd Fishing Report

Sunny, with a high near 79. East wind 5 to 8 mph.

Sunny, mild and pretty boring weather overall.  The bright sun is not helping things along, however we have seen the return of some caddis the past day or two.  Watch for aggressive rises and even some small clouds of black caddis out there.

Most of the day we are fishing beetles with bead heads below them.  Night time mousing has started to pick up too.

Remember the Driftless Drive In Fly Fishing Show and Film Festival is this Friday!

June 1st Fishing Report

Mostly sunny, with a high near 75. East wind 3 to 6 mph.

Nothing all that important to report.  The creeks are still a touch warmer than normal for this time of year.  We’re doing well with rusty spinners in the morning to rising fish until the sun hits the water.  After that, we are fishing terrestrials with a dropper all day long.  In the evenings we are getting a few fish feeding on lighter colored mayflies on the surface again.

Remember, this Friday is the Drive In Fly Fishing Show and Film Festival.  There are still tickets available!
