September 22nd Fishing Report

Sunny, with a high near 63. North wind 5 to 10 mph, with gusts as high as 18 mph.
What an excellent start for the fall. The weather is very trout friendly with highs in the 60s all week long and lows in the low to mid 40s. Bring an extra layer this week for the chilly mornings!
Fish are responding very well to these temperatures. Things are taking a bit of time in the morning to get moving which means we are nymphing early, hopper dropper mid day through the evening, and we are starting to see the beginnings of the fall olive hatch in the later afternoon.
Creeks are clear to slightly stained after the rains a couple of days ago. Everything is in very good shape fishing wise.

September 20th Fishing Report

Rain fell heavy and quick last night briefly muddying things up a bit, but creeks are dropping and clearly quickly.

The cool weather is a blessing and fish are going to be in an excellent mood moving forward! Cool weather and water ahead all week long!!!

September 19th Fishing Report

Sunny, with a high near 85. South wind 6 to 13 mph, with gusts as high as 21 mph.
More important that just the fishing report, (hopper dropper etc same as usual for the late summer) the weather coming up looks excellent. Today is hot and sunny, tomorrow we could see some significant rain (which we still need), but starting Tuesday week we get a MAJOR cool down that looks like it will last quite a few days. Highs in the mid 60s, lows in the 40s… This is the weather we wait for all summer long! Look for not only terrestrials to be good, but we should see our late afternoon olives hatching then too (there are quite a few on the rocks ready to go). Get ready to visit for our first taste of true late summer/fall weather!

September 15th Fishing Report

Sunny, with a high near 72. Light west wind.
A very pleasant summer day today. Weather looks good, even with a chance of rain later this week, until a brief warm up on Sunday.
Nothing much has changed fishing wise. It is hopper season in the Driftless! The banks are full of hopper, beetles, ants, and crickets. The day fly action does not really get going until the ground dries out, sometimes fish will not really look up until late morning.
Nymphing is key right now. Throwing some thinner bodied bugs such as perdigons, zebra midges and hot spot PTs works all day. We still prefer to fish them under a foam pattern (hippie stomper, training wheel etc) as when the terrestrial bite is on you have a chance for a fish to eat not only the nymph, but the ‘indicator’ too.
Creeks overall are clear to slightly stained with good temperatures.

September 14th Fishing Report

Mostly cloudy, with a high near 69. Northwest wind 7 to 13 mph, with gusts as high as 21 mph.
A cooler day today will have fish in a decent mood. The gusty winds in the summertime help to blow terrestrials into the creeks making beetles, ants and hopper a good choice mid day through the evening.
Nymphs are still the most effective right now, with fish feeding on them all day long in the riffles and the runs below. Do not be afraid to toss a hopper/dropper all day long as the larger terrestrial pattern will act as an edible indicator for the nymphs down below.
Standard summertime conditions, nothing much has changed and the fishing remains good!

September 10th Fishing Update

Sunny, with a high near 76. Calm wind becoming south 5 to 9 mph in the morning.
We’re back in the summer rhythm. Cooler weather, followed by a couple days of warming, then storms cool things down again. Today and Saturday look good, Sunday we might get some thundershowers. We are not forecasted for anything horrible in terms of rainfall, but be aware Sunday and early into next week. After the storms, things cool down again.
Water flows, clarity and temps are overall quite good. Fishing has been solid and will remain so on terrestrials as well as bead heads fished in the shin to thigh deep moving water below riffles. Tricos are showing up now and then in the mornings (a bit later, not first thing right now) and we are seeing a few mayfly hatches in the last few hours of daylight.

September 6th Fishing Report

Sunny, with a high near 77. Calm wind becoming west around 6 mph in the afternoon.
What a week we have ahead of us! Today is the hottest day all week. Temperatures dip closer to 70 starting tomorrow.
It has been so comfortable out there lately with water and air temperatures both angler and trout friendly.
Hatches are sparse with a few tricos still hanging on in the mornings and a handful of midges and caddis in the evenings. As it gets chillier, there is a chance to see some olives hatching. While we won’t say it is an official hatch, be prepared just in case!
Hoppers have been fantastic lately! Fishing a hopper or hippie stomper with a bead head below is the way to go.

September 3rd Fishing Report

Showers, with thunderstorms also possible after 1pm. High near 64. Southeast wind 9 to 13 mph, with gusts as high as 22 mph. Chance of precipitation is 90%. New rainfall amounts between a quarter and half of an inch possible.
Small cell of rain over the area right now. It should not be enough to mess up the fishing outside of a couple of isolated places. Overall the creeks are in great shape flowing clear to slightly stained. Only the Bad Axe watershed (lower portion) and the West Fork of the Kickapoo are still showing a medium to heavy stain in areas.
The cooler weather has trout in quite the good mood. Fishing a hopper/dropper all day long, and throwing purple klinkhammers at rising fish has been very effective.
With the cloud cover today; scuds, leeches and streamers will be quite effective too.
The holiday weekend is shaping up to be excellent weather. Highs in the low to mid 70s and dropping down into the low 50s at night!

September 2nd Fishing Report

Partly sunny, with a high near 73. Calm wind becoming southeast 5 to 8 mph in the morning.
It was approaching chilly this morning!
Creeks are clear to slightly stained with only the largest creeks still stained to murky. The upper sections and tributaries have all been fishing very well the past few days.
While there are no major hatches (a slight chance of olives showing up in the afternoon with the cooler weather), fish are still happily eating terrestrials. While most of the action is subsurface right now, fishing a foam pattern as your indicator, and tossing ants and beetles under overhanging vegetation and along grass edges can provide some exciting fishing under these conditions!

August 31st Fishing Report

Mostly sunny, with a high near 78. Calm wind becoming east around 6 mph in the afternoon.
Creeks in our area are clear to slightly stained with good temperatures and flows. The weather is quite nice right now and cools down a bit later on in the week.
Fishing has been very solid when the sun is off the water (avoid bright mid day sun or find shade). While there are no major hatches, there are still some tricos around as well as small white mayflies in the evenings. The main menu item continues to be terrestrials. Fishing the shin to thigh deep water below the riffles with a foam pattern and a dropper is key to catching fish right now.
