April 14th Fishing Report

A 20 percent chance of showers after noon. Cloudy, with a high near 44. Northwest wind 7 to 11 mph, with gusts as high as 20 mph.
Creeks are clear with temperatures in the low 50s.
Today is the last day of cloud cover for a few more days. This means that the hatches should transition from olives (cloudy weather) to caddis and craneflies (sunnier weather) over the next few days. Watch the rise forms. If the fish are gently rising or sipping it is most likely olives. If they are splashy and jumping out of the water, then it is most likely caddis or cranes.
We’re still having good success on leeches and foam flies with a dropper below during the early part of the day. Fish start feeding on the surface typically around mid day.

April 13th Fishing Report

A slight chance of showers before 9am, then a chance of showers after 1pm. Cloudy, with a high near 45. West wind 8 to 15 mph, with gusts as high as 25 mph. Chance of precipitation is 30%.
The cloud cover continues! It has really made fishing much better as our low and clear creeks have fish spooky when the sun is shining.
Water temps are in the low 50s. Fishing is really available throughout the entire day at this point, but trending better in the later part of the day when bugs are hatching. We are seeing olives, caddis, and craneflies hatching as well as some midges and spring stoneflies.
Our go to early is an attractor foam pattern with a dropper in the morning (training wheel and surrender) then switching to dries when the fish are rising.
Leeches and streamers have been great lately with the fish more comfortable chasing a bigger bug when the clouds are overhead.

April 12th Fishing Report

Mostly cloudy, with a high near 53. Breezy, with a west wind 8 to 17 mph.
The fishing has been top notch lately. It has not done more than drizzle here leaving our creeks crystal clear and flowing a bit low.
We are seeing craneflies, caddis, olives, and a few midges and spring stoneflies too. Surface activity has been pretty consistent in the afternoon, while fishing a larger foam pattern with a bead head dropper has been the go to rig in the morning.
Water temperatures are in the 50s, that means pretty much anything will work subsurface. Our best flies have been brush hogs, Dr. Fauci, euro squirrels and purple drank.

April 9th Fishing Report

Showers likely, mainly before 3pm. Cloudy, with a high near 56. Southeast wind 6 to 9 mph becoming west in the afternoon. Winds could gust as high as 18 mph. Chance of precipitation is 70%. New precipitation amounts of less than a tenth of an inch possible.
Creeks are clear and still a bit low. We did not receive any heavy rains and the ground is dry enough that the drizzle yesterday was soaked up right away. Creeks are clear to very slightly tea stained with temperatures in the low 50s.
Caddis, Olives, spring stoneflies, craneflies, midges…. There is a lot of food that trout are feeding on on the surface. Fish were rising early yesterday,
Subsurface has been excellent on euro squirrels, scud muffins, and purple drank.

April 8th Fishing Report

Showers, mainly before 10am. Steady temperature around 60. South wind 8 to 11 mph, with gusts as high as 20 mph. Chance of precipitation is 100%. New precipitation amounts between a tenth and quarter of an inch possible.
Creeks are clear and low. Temperatures are in the low 50s.
The forecast is not calling for enough rain to change that much except in the case of an isolated thundershower. If the valley you are in is getting some heavy rains, cross into the next valley as the weather could be completely different!
We’re seeing midges, caddis, olives and a few spring stoneflies on the menu right now. Typically we will start with a foam fly and a dropper early, then switch to the appropriate dry to match the hatch.
If the fish are lockjaw and refuse to eat your dry, try hanging an emerger or pupae behind your dry and hang on!

April 6th Fishing Report

A slight chance of showers and thunderstorms before 4pm, then a slight chance of showers and thunderstorms after 5pm. Partly sunny, with a high near 77. South wind 6 to 10 mph, with gusts as high as 20 mph. Chance of precipitation is 20%.
Creeks are low and clear with temperatures in the low 50s.
The hot weather over the past few days put the water temperature into the perfect zone for transitioning into spring. We have seen midges, olives, and even some caddis hatching. While this activity might slow down a bit with the cooler and cloudy weather, the fishing should stay strong as trout finally get a bit of cover from the sun with the cloudy days forecasted.
Fishing has been quite good starting with leeches or nymphs first thing in the morning. Focus on the shin to thigh deep water below the riffles right now as fish are getting into position early to move into the riffles to feed. After mid day (ish) fish will push up into the shallower water to feed on hatching bugs when they are present. Nymphing or swinging soft hackles in the riffles can be excellent. Watch the riffles closely as trout will rise to caddis dries in the broken water when they are hatching.

April 5th Fishing Report

Isolated showers and thunderstorms between 9am and 2pm. Mostly sunny, with a high near 75. South wind 7 to 14 mph, with gusts as high as 24 mph. Chance of precipitation is 20%.
The warm weather over the weekend put the water temperatures in the low 50s and the creeks turned on! We saw olives and caddis the past couple of days and the trend will continue even with some chillier weather and rain this week.
Fish are feeding subsurface in the mornings, then you can see pods of rising fish in the afternoons if everything clicks. Fly patterns don’t matter too much subsurface, but scuds and caddis larvae are a bit more popular on the trout’s menu right now.

April 2nd Fishing Report

Sunny, with a high near 53. Breezy, with a south wind 7 to 17 mph, with gusts as high as 29 mph.
Creeks are clear and a bit low with temperatures in the high 40s to 50. With the warm weather Saturday and Sunday we should see a heavier hatch of olives and even possibly some errant early caddis. As of now the dry fly fishing is solid, but not crazy good overall. Most of our fish are being caught on nymphs and caddis larvae fished below the riffles in the shin to thigh deep water.
With the water being so clear, make sure to approach with as much stealth as possible. Fish are super spooky.
We are still doing well fishing a foam fly with a dropper below, then switching to dries only if we find rising fish in the later afternoon.

March 31st Fishing Report

Partly sunny, with a high near 37. Breezy, with a northwest wind 7 to 17 mph, with gusts as high as 28 mph.
We’re pretty tired of the wind and cold front! Good news is we are staring at mid 60s for the weekend!
Creeks are clear and a bit low with temperatures in the high 40s. We’re still hanging on waiting for the warmer weather (this weekend!) to really see the olives and possibly caddis hatching. They are on the rocks and ready to go!
Fishing has been quite good subsurface the past few windy days. Spanish bullets, perdigons, and coulee scuds are the main items on the menu right now.

Please remember that after the crowds of last year, and the continued traffic on the creeks while the pandemic drags on, stream etiquette is even more important than ever!
The general rule of courtesy is: If you see a car at an access point, drive to the next one. There is no need for multiple cars at access points, we have enough water to spread out on.

Do not ‘high hole’ another angler. Fishing upstream is what we do in the Driftless. Never walk upstream of another angler and start fishing (unless you check in with that angler and get permission first),

When you park, do not block gates, driveways, or field access roads with your vehicle.

Finally do not trespass on private property! Make sure you are 100% positive you are on public property if you are on the bank. The various apps and map books are not 100% accurate! Make sure you do your homework, check in with the landowner, or just keep your feet wet whenever possible. The Driftless is a great place due to landowners allowing anglers to fish or selling their land to conservation easements. If anglers do not follow the rules, the excellent system we have here will vanish.
On the surface we are still seeing a solid midge hatch mixed in with a few olives.

March 30th Fishing Report

Partly sunny, with a high near 48. Breezy, with a west wind 13 to 20 mph, with gusts as high as 29 mph.
Creeks are clear with temperatures in the mid to high 40s. We’re waiting for temps to hit 50 degrees (which should happen in a couple of days….) for things to really take off. As of now we are still getting rising fish to midges and olives and we are seeing a few caddis. Things are ready to pop and could go off at any time bringing us into the beginning of the peak of season. It just needs to warm up a degree or two!
