August 28th Fishing Report

UPDATE 5:00 PM No more rain tonight! Viroqua received no more rain today, creeks are clear to slightly stained and fishing very well. Cool temps tonight and a week of better temperatures and happy fish ahead starting tomorrow!!

Showers and thunderstorms likely, mainly after 4pm. Mostly cloudy, with a high near 83. South wind 6 to 13 mph becoming west in the afternoon. Chance of precipitation is 60%. New rainfall amounts between a quarter and half of an inch possible.
Rains last night dropped about half an inch to an inch, a brief but heavy shower passed through the area this morning and we are supposed to see more through the day. We will keep you posted, but if there isn’t a massive gully washer event, the ground is so dry that these rains should set us up for a fantastic weekend of fishing.
Hopper dropper has been the ticket all day long, with a few hatches of micro olives and the trico spinner fall very early in the morning and late in the evening. In cloudy water, fish a worm pattern and leech!

August 27th Fishing Report

Isolated showers before 10am, then a slight chance of showers and thunderstorms after 4pm. Partly sunny, with a high near 87. West wind 5 to 7 mph. Chance of precipitation is 20%.
Chance of rain tonight and into tomorrow, the Friday rain totals keep climbing as weather is pushed around by the hurricane in the south. As scary as the rainfall looks, it is MUCH needed right now. The ground is very dry and much of the rain will be soaked up. We just have to hope it comes in a long rain storm instead of a brief gully washer.
Still quite hot today.

Overall fishing has held up a bit on the smaller creeks and springs. The larger bodies of water are flowing too warm for good fishing. Please use your thermometer!! Anything over 65 will be slow fishing and much higher than that can be lethal to trout.

The trico spinner fall is happening in the morning, but it still just isn’t great this summer. You will have fish rising and bugs falling but it isn’t excellent. Overall terrestrial fishing is the way to go. You can fish a hopper and dropper all day long! If you want to get a bit fancier, toss an ant or beetle under overhanging vegetation or near undercut banks. If you let them sink a bit naturally they are even more successful.
Night time fishing has been good as well. Fish are hitting mice and larger streamers under the cover of darkness.

August 26th Fishing Report

Sunny, with a high near 92. Heat index values as high as 96. Southwest wind 7 to 14 mph, with gusts as high as 24 mph.
Hot and sunny again today. Please use your thermometer as things are warming up quickly area wide after a couple of high 90 degree days! Anything over 65 degrees will be slow fishing and can stress trout. A couple more days and we get a cool down. It might be a good idea to stay off the creeks for the next couple of days.

August 25th Fishing Report

Sunny, with a high near 92. Heat index values as high as 99. Calm wind becoming southeast around 6 mph in the morning.
It’s hot! Water temperatures are climbing and the heat index is going to almost hit 100 today. Fishing isn’t recommended as it will be rough on you and the fish right now. If the storms actually hit on Thursday, then things will get back on track and cool down.

August 24th Fishing Report

Sunny, with a high near 91. Heat index values as high as 98. Calm wind becoming southwest 5 to 8 mph in the afternoon.
Some scorching weather the next few days with highs in the high 80s through Thursday. Might be a good week to stay home and give trout a break! If you do fish please make sure to use your thermometer. Water temps over 65 will mean poor fishing and much higher than that can be stressful or lethal to fish.
The weekend puts temps back in the high 70s, but until then it will be HOT.
Fishing will be best early and late avoiding the mid day heat.
While hatches are fairly sparse still (very normal for this time of year), trout will still eat terrestrials on the surface, as well as smaller thin profile bead heads subsurface.

August 22nd Fishing Report

Showers likely, with thunderstorms also possible after 10am. Partly sunny, with a high near 84. Southwest wind 6 to 10 mph, with gusts as high as 20 mph. Chance of precipitation is 60%. New rainfall amounts of less than a tenth of an inch, except higher amounts possible in thunderstorms.
No real rain as of now in Viroqua and the radar shows the storm heading south of us. We will keep you updated.
Creeks are clear and a touch low with temperatures in the low to mid 60s. Please use your thermometer and do not fish water temps over 65. The West Fork and Bad Axe watersheds are the warmer creeks right now and it would be wise to avoid them this weekend.
Hatches are still mid summer sparse, which is normal. A few micro olives and tricos in the mornings and evening but the main dish on the menu is terrestrials. Hoppers, beetles, ants etc. We’re doing very well with our standard hippie stomper on the surface with a bead head dropped below.
Mousing has been fun lately too. It isn’t a bad idea to toss a mouse at dusk just to see if one of the massive moue eaters will play!

August 19th Fishing Report

Sunny, with a high near 80. Southwest wind 3 to 8 mph.
Steady weather until the weekend. We are seeing a few midges and mayflies hatching in the evenings, but overall fishing has been best on terrestrials and bead heads. Fishing smaller (size 16) training wheels and hippie stompers has been good on the surface, but ants have been even better!
Subsurface fishing is quite good on thin bodied patterns such as zebra nymphs and perdigons. The key is finding shaded areas. This means fishing early and late, or finding areas of overhanging vegetation.

August 18th Fishing Report

Sunny, with a high near 76. Calm wind becoming north around 6 mph in the morning.
Creeks are a bit low and running clear with temperatures in the low 60s. Only the West Fork and Bad Axe creeks are running over 65 degrees. Use your thermometer and don’t bother with anything over 65 degrees. Not only will the fishing stink, but you risk stressing fish.
There are some olives hatching in the evenings getting fish to rise the last few hours of the day, and the trico spinner fall is still very sparse in the mornings. It is summertime so terrestrials are the hot ticket! Running a smaller hippie stomper or chubby chernobyl with a dropper below will get you fish all day long. Make sure you are casting to overhanging vegetation and shady areas!

August 15th Fishing Report

Mostly cloudy through mid morning, then gradual clearing, with a high near 77. Northwest wind 6 to 11 mph, with gusts as high as 20 mph.
Rains were localized last night. Most of our area creeks are in great shape with clear to slightly stained water. One or two valleys received heavy rain. If your favorite creek is murky, drive to the next valley and you will find better water!
Tricos in the mornings are around, but still not in large numbers. In the evenings we are seeing some trico hatches as well as a few micro olives and midges. If you don’t feel like fishing size 20 dries, a hopper with a bead head below will catch fish!

August 14th Fishing Report

Sunny, with a high near 84. Light southeast wind becoming south 5 to 9 mph in the morning.
It’s summer. Things are warm and fish are sluggish when the sun is on the creeks. We could use a little rain to put a slight stain on the water and cool things down. The good news is that things start cooling down tomorrow with temperatures in the mid to high 70s instead of 80s the next few days.
Tricos are around, but not in huge numbers. Look for the spinner fall at dawn until about 9 a.m. Otherwise, fish a terrestrial with a dropper below. Smaller training wheels with a zebra midge or food down below have been hot!
