June 5th Fishing Report

Scattered showers before 11am, then a slight chance of showers and thunderstorms after 5pm. Patchy fog before 8am. Otherwise, partly sunny, with a high near 83. Southwest wind 3 to 6 mph. Chance of precipitation is 40%. New rainfall amounts of less than a tenth of an inch, except higher amounts possible in thunderstorms.

Half an inch of rain last night was a good refresher, not enough to really change anything permanently, but a much needed soaking rain!  Creeks remain clear to slightly stained with temperatures in the low 60s.  It is time to start watching water temperatures.  Anything over 65 is going to be poor fishing.

Still seeing some fish sipping spinners in the morning, then quickly retreating to cover when the sun starts to shine on the water.  Casting a beetle with a bead head below it tight against the bank will get some fish out to play.  A handful of caddis dries are working, mostly in dark colors, and we are seeing some lighter colored mayflies later in the evenings as well.

June 3rd Fishing Report

Sunny, with a high near 82. Calm wind becoming south 5 to 9 mph in the morning.

Creeks are low and super clear with temperatures right around 60.  Some of the larger, slower moving creeks are getting surface temperatures that are in the mid 60s, we suggest avoiding fishing in water over 65 degrees.

Strange bug days are here.  We are still seeing rusty spinners in the very early morning, and some PMDs and Sulphurs in the very late evenings.  Sprinkle that with some caddis (Splitsville caddis in peacock!) during the day, and you have what’s on the menu.  If nothing is rising, using a large ground beetle with a Spanish bullet below will catch fish in the riffles, even in the bright sun.

DRIFTLESS DRIVE IN FLY FISHING SHOW AND FILM FESTIVAL IS THIS FRIDAY!

June 2nd Fishing Report

Sunny, with a high near 79. East wind 5 to 8 mph.

Sunny, mild and pretty boring weather overall.  The bright sun is not helping things along, however we have seen the return of some caddis the past day or two.  Watch for aggressive rises and even some small clouds of black caddis out there.

Most of the day we are fishing beetles with bead heads below them.  Night time mousing has started to pick up too.

Remember the Driftless Drive In Fly Fishing Show and Film Festival is this Friday!

June 1st Fishing Report

Mostly sunny, with a high near 75. East wind 3 to 6 mph.

Nothing all that important to report.  The creeks are still a touch warmer than normal for this time of year.  We’re doing well with rusty spinners in the morning to rising fish until the sun hits the water.  After that, we are fishing terrestrials with a dropper all day long.  In the evenings we are getting a few fish feeding on lighter colored mayflies on the surface again.

Remember, this Friday is the Drive In Fly Fishing Show and Film Festival.  There are still tickets available!

May 29th Fishing Report

Mostly sunny, with a high near 82. Light east wind.

Warmer than normal for this time of year, but not horrible.  The dry fly fishing remains elusive with hatches sparse and unpredictable.  You really have to find both the pods of happy fish, and the small swarms of mayflies or caddis, mostly in the evenings.  The good news is that the subsurface fishing is very good.  Smaller flashy nymphs with a thin profile are doing quite well out there.  We are still fishing them below a beetle or hippie stomper as an indicator.

May 28th Fishing Report

Sunny, with a high near 80. East wind 6 to 8 mph, with gusts as high as 18 mph.

Creeks are still recovering from a couple of warm days.  Temperatures are still ok outside of places like the West Fork (too warm there) and a couple other larger, lower sections.

Overall temperatures are in the lower 60s and will normalize over the next couple of days.

It is still small terrestrial with a dropper time, and we have seen more success on smaller terrestrials like an ant acid lately.

In the evenings, close to dark, we have seen some lighter colored mayflies hatching.  A light colored hackle stacker seem to do the trick most evenings.

May 27th Fishing Report

Mostly sunny, with a high near 86. Light east wind.

Hot and sunny out there.  The couple of super heated days have had water temps in the higher 60s on some creeks (West Fork of the Kickapoo specifically).  Watch water temps on the bigger waters.

The good news is things cool down back to normal starting tonight.  On top of the normal terrestrial with a dropper, ants are becoming more and more important with the sunny weather.  Fish an ant under overhanging vegetation and in any shaded area!

Subsurface fishing is solid with the patterns that are the most successful smaller and thinner with each bright day.  A Pearl Jam or TZM is excellent right now.

May 26th Fishing Report

Hot couple of days, then back to normal.  Hoping we get some rain after this hot and humid weather.

Sunny, with a high near 86. South wind 6 to 9 mph, with gusts as high as 18 mph.

Watch the heat out there!  This super heating the next couple of days will push water temperatures into the mid 60s mid day.  Your best bet is to fish early and avoid the sun.  Thankfully things cool down later this week.

Fishing is still best with smaller terrestrials and foam patterns with droppers, then waiting until late in the evening to see rising fish to lighter colored mayflies and a few caddis.
