April 4th Fishing Report

Mostly cloudy, with a high near 52. East wind 5 to 7 mph.
Creeks are clear and still a bit low. We did not get a lot of rain in the last storm a few days ago. Water temps are in the mid to high 40s on average.
Micro streamers and leeches have been great lately! Rounding up the subsurface fishing with scuds and caddis larvae will catch fish all day long.
Hatches have been around, but lately it has been too windy for any good dry fly activity. Today should be much better. Watch for olives and spring stoneflies in the afternoon.

April 3rd Fishing Report

Mostly cloudy, with a high near 49. Breezy, with a west wind 10 to 18 mph, with gusts as high as 30 mph.
After the precipitation yesterday, things are in much better shape than we expected. The ground is so dry that is soaked up most of the water leaving most creeks clear! Fishing was solid on mid sized nymphs as well as smaller leeches and streamers. There was a bit of an olive (mayfly) hatch but the wind made dry fly fishing difficult. The same should be expected today for the hatch.

April 2nd Fishing Report

Rain and thunderstorms before 4pm, then a chance of rain. High near 58. Breezy, with an east wind 18 to 24 mph becoming south in the afternoon. Winds could gust as high as 38 mph. Chance of precipitation is 100%. New rainfall amounts between a tenth and quarter of an inch, except higher amounts possible in thunderstorms.
In the past 24 hours we have received about half to almost an inch of precipitation. Last night it snowed, then switched to rain. That rain is melting things and putting some color in most of our creeks. We’re forecasted mostly for drizzle through the day today so things should stabilize and even potentially clear up quickly.
There is fishable water out there, not a lot, but it exists.
The ground is warm enough that fishing a san juan or squirmy wormy as well as leeches and scuds in the stained to murky water will be successful.

April 1st Fishing Report

A slight chance of rain before 4pm, then snow likely, possibly mixed with rain. Increasing clouds, with a high near 44. Breezy, with a southeast wind 9 to 18 mph, with gusts as high as 29 mph. Chance of precipitation is 60%. Little or no snow accumulation expected.
Nothing major to report fishing wise. Creeks remain clear to stained with good spring water temperatures. A little chillier than the past week, but still solid.
Olives and spring stoneflies are making appearances, seemingly randomly… Subsurface fishing is the ticket. Scuds, leeches, flashy nymphs and caddis larvae are all doing well right now.

March 31st Fishing Report

Sunny, with a high near 42. North wind 9 to 11 mph, with gusts as high as 23 mph.
Creeks are clear to slightly stained overall. Temperatures in the mid 40s to higher 40s.
The rains yesterday were light to just a mist in most of our area, we were spared the heavier rains. The mornings the next couple of days will be chilly. No need to get out there early.
We’re seeing some olives and spring stones on the surface while the black midges are dwindling in numbers. The hatches are in the later afternoon when water temperatures are pushing 50 degrees.
Subsurface fishing has been the most effective with scuds, and flashy nymphs working quite well. The leech and small streamer bite continues to be solid with fish eating them if they are dead drifted or just twitched being preferred over fast movement.

March 28th Fishing Report

A 20 percent chance of rain before 9am. Mostly sunny, with a high near 78. Breezy, with a southwest wind 9 to 18 mph, with gusts as high as 28 mph.
We received about 1/4 of an inch of rain last night which was almost fully absorbed into the ground! This is much needed rainfall, and we are supposed to get a bit more over the next couple of days.
Creeks are clear to slightly stained overall. Water temperatures are in the mid 40s. We are seeing some olives and spring stoneflies in the afternoons area wide. With the high winds, if you can not tuck into a valley, a leech or scud will work just fine to catch fish all day long.

March 26th Fishing Report

Mostly sunny, with a high near 54. West wind 5 to 9 mph, with gusts as high as 18 mph.
Things are starting to wake up. Reports of olives and spring stones came in yesterday, and with the warming weather, we expect that to continue.
Creeks are mostly clear and low with some still slightly stained. Temperatures are in the mid 40s right now.
Remember April 1st you need to renew your Wisconsin fishing license!

March 25th Fishing Report

Sunny, with a high near 48. Northwest wind 5 to 9 mph.
Creeks are clear to stained with temperatures in the low 40s.
Nothing major weather wise. Trout seem to have transitioned into springtime well and are feeding in the runs, seams, and even riffles starting later in the morning.
We are still not seeing any major surface activity with most fish being caught subsurface on scuds and larger nymphs.

March 24th Fishing Report

TodayMostly cloudy through mid morning, then gradual clearing, with a high near 46. Breezy, with a northwest wind 11 to 17 mph, with gusts as high as 28 mph.
Creeks are clear to slightly stained with temperatures in the low to mid 40s. Nothing major going on out there with some sparse blue winged olive hatches and good subsurface activity on scuds, thicker bodied bugs like caddis pupae, and leeches.
The week ahead will be a bit overcast which will help the fishing as our water remains low and clear.

March 21st Fishing Report

A slight chance of showers between 4pm and 5pm. Mostly cloudy, with a high near 48. Breezy, with a southwest wind 9 to 16 mph, with gusts as high as 32 mph. Chance of precipitation is 20%.
With the melting snow hitting the creeks, fishing is all about managing the melt. The problem is cold water entering the system from snowmelt. Things aren’t too muddy out there as the majority of creeks are in good, fishable shape. But once the cold water hits, things shut down rapidly. Remember to use your thermometer and watch for temperature drops in the afternoon.
Cloudy days like today help to keep the sun from melting things too quickly!
Focus on fishing scuds, caddis larvae/pupae, and flashier bugs in the stained water. Midges and thin bodied bugs subsurface in the clearer water. Hatches remain sparse, with a few sightings of blue winged olives.
