Trout season in the Driftless is closed!

Thank you all for another memorable season. The shop is now closed, we are taking a few days to sleep in, catch up things we put aside during the season, and relax a bit. During the off season the shop will be open limited hours. You can still call, email, or WhatsApp us at any time!

October 14th Fishing Report

Partly sunny, with a high near 50. Northwest wind 9 to 11 mph, with gusts as high as 20 mph.
Finally, some cloud cover the past couple of days of season. It’s chilly, windy, and partly cloudy today, then sunny and breezy tomorrow.

Season closes on the 16th (you can fish through the 15th of October). There is no fishing after that until the first Saturday in January in our area (even catch and release).

The shop will be open all day today, then until noon tomorrow. In the off season we will take a few days off, then open Saturdays (or by appointment) starting November. We will be answering the phone, checking emails, and social media through the off season as normal. Keep an eye on this report and social media for off season hours.

October 12th Fishing Report

Isolated showers after 1pm. Mostly cloudy, with a high near 63. East wind 9 to 11 mph, with gusts as high as 21 mph. Chance of precipitation is 20%.
We’re remaining hopeful that some clouds roll in today. The lack of clouds has kept the fishing very average overall. Hoppers with droppers and plumbing the deep pools has been successful in most spots.
Olive mayflies are here and hatching (and getting a spinner fall too) but up until today the surface ‘match the hatch’ activity has been poor. With the clouds this weekend we might see that change.

Keep in mind that there is major road construction going on in Viroqua. Use the municipal lots just west of the store, both the front and back entries to the shop are open for you (follow the signs for the back).

October 11th Fishing Report

Mostly sunny, with a high near 78. Southwest wind 7 to 10 mph becoming northwest in the afternoon. Winds could gust as high as 20 mph.
Still unseasonably warm, still clear water, and still bluebird skies. We might get a slight break in the weather Saturday and Sunday with some cloud cover, but things remain stuck and sluggish right now.
With the cloud cover we might see fish feeding on the surface (micro olives and midges) and the hopper and dropper fishing will continue along with the small leech and streamer fishing.

October 10th Fishing Report

Sunny, with a high near 74. South wind 6 to 8 mph.
Fishing is still rough out there due to the bright sun. Water levels are still pretty good, and temperatures are perfect area wide, we just need a break from the sun. We are forecasted to get some sort of cloud cover over the weekend, which should help fishing quite a bit.
Olives are around, but fish aren’t necessarily eating them. It is still hopper/dropper time.

October 8th Fishing Report

Sunny, with a high near 70. Calm wind becoming northwest around 6 mph in the afternoon.
Creeks are quite low and very clear clear. Water temperatures are in the mid to high 50s area wide. Things would be great for fishing if we could get some clouds! Yesterday morning fishing was pretty solid thanks to some spotty cloud cover. Once the clouds disappeared the fishing became pretty difficult overall. Shade is the key to finding happy fish right now. It can be shade from trees, overhanging vegetation, the shadow of a bluff face, or an undercut bank. Anything to keep the sun off the water is good.
There are olives around, especially in the evening, both hatching and a spinner fall. The problem seems to be that trout are not happy eating on the surface unless it is dark out.
Hoppers and beetles in the riffles with droppers is still the most effective way of fishing along with rolling heavy tungsten nymphs on the bottoms of pools.

October 7th Fishing Report

Areas of frost before 9am. Otherwise, mostly sunny, with a high near 67. West wind 3 to 8 mph.
The weather is beautiful to be out in, but the fishing is still lagging behind where it normally is this time of year. It feels like it just doesn’t want to be fall, even the leaves are not changing much yet!
It’s too cold to be great fishing super early, things start getting going around 9. Unfortunately that is when the sun starts shining on the water as well. Find shade, walk a little farther from the access point (when legal) and you will find happier fish.
Smaller, darker terrestrials seem to be preferred right now, with thin bodied bead heads below them. We are seeing a smattering of olives hatching in the evening (the tiny 18-20 sizes ones), but nothing we would say is a real hatch yet.
Another note, it is crowded out there. So please fish friendly. Give other anglers space. It is still common courtesy to move to another access point or another valley if there is a car at a spot. Do not hop in upstream of another Angler, and always check in with other anglers to see what their plan is.

October 5th Fishing Report

Mostly cloudy through mid morning, then gradual clearing, with a high near 80. Breezy, with a south wind 6 to 11 mph increasing to 15 to 20 mph in the afternoon. Winds could gust as high as 33 mph.
We actually have some scattered cloud cover this morning! We have also seen a slight increase in the tiny olives hatching in the afternoon/evening too. It isn’t as exciting as we want it to be, but the fishing is inching closer to being where it should be for October.
It’s still hopper or beetle with a dropper and watching for fish to rise to emergers and mayflies in the later afternoon and evening.
Small (very small) streamers twitched below the riffles and stripped through the runs are effective now too.

October 4th Fishing Report

Sunny, with a high near 69. Northeast wind 5 to 9 mph.
Creeks are clear and low and the fishing remains a bit slower than it should. This high pressure system has been hanging over us for too long!
Tomorrow we get a bit of a warm up, but that brings some moisture and with that, hopefully some clouds and even a slight chance of showers Saturday night. If clouds and drizzle come that would be extremely helpful.
Sunday is sunny and cool again.
We are seeing olives here and there, but not in the numbers that will get fish to go too crazy. A hopper or beetle with a blue winged olive nymph below is still the way to fish right now.
Shade is key. If you find shade, you will find happier fish!

October 3rd Fishing Report

Partly sunny, then gradually becoming sunny, with a high near 74. North wind 3 to 8 mph.
There is a slight chance of some clouds later today and into tonight.
Fishing has been sluggish due to a high pressure system that has been sitting over us for what feels like forever! We’re not seeing much for hatches unless some clouds roll in, and the trout overall have a bit of lockjaw. There are a handful of midges hatching and a light smattering of olives but overall the surface activity has been slow lately.
Hoppers with droppers are catching fish still, as is rolling heavy nymphs on the bottom of the riffles and runs. Streamers have also been pretty good when the sun is off the water.
Remember that season closes after the 15th of this month! Enjoy some fall weather and get out there and fish!
