October 7th Fishing Report

Areas of frost before 9am. Otherwise, mostly sunny, with a high near 67. West wind 3 to 8 mph.
The weather is beautiful to be out in, but the fishing is still lagging behind where it normally is this time of year. It feels like it just doesn’t want to be fall, even the leaves are not changing much yet!
It’s too cold to be great fishing super early, things start getting going around 9. Unfortunately that is when the sun starts shining on the water as well. Find shade, walk a little farther from the access point (when legal) and you will find happier fish.
Smaller, darker terrestrials seem to be preferred right now, with thin bodied bead heads below them. We are seeing a smattering of olives hatching in the evening (the tiny 18-20 sizes ones), but nothing we would say is a real hatch yet.
Another note, it is crowded out there. So please fish friendly. Give other anglers space. It is still common courtesy to move to another access point or another valley if there is a car at a spot. Do not hop in upstream of another Angler, and always check in with other anglers to see what their plan is.

October 5th Fishing Report

Mostly cloudy through mid morning, then gradual clearing, with a high near 80. Breezy, with a south wind 6 to 11 mph increasing to 15 to 20 mph in the afternoon. Winds could gust as high as 33 mph.
We actually have some scattered cloud cover this morning! We have also seen a slight increase in the tiny olives hatching in the afternoon/evening too. It isn’t as exciting as we want it to be, but the fishing is inching closer to being where it should be for October.
It’s still hopper or beetle with a dropper and watching for fish to rise to emergers and mayflies in the later afternoon and evening.
Small (very small) streamers twitched below the riffles and stripped through the runs are effective now too.

October 4th Fishing Report

Sunny, with a high near 69. Northeast wind 5 to 9 mph.
Creeks are clear and low and the fishing remains a bit slower than it should. This high pressure system has been hanging over us for too long!
Tomorrow we get a bit of a warm up, but that brings some moisture and with that, hopefully some clouds and even a slight chance of showers Saturday night. If clouds and drizzle come that would be extremely helpful.
Sunday is sunny and cool again.
We are seeing olives here and there, but not in the numbers that will get fish to go too crazy. A hopper or beetle with a blue winged olive nymph below is still the way to fish right now.
Shade is key. If you find shade, you will find happier fish!

October 3rd Fishing Report

Partly sunny, then gradually becoming sunny, with a high near 74. North wind 3 to 8 mph.
There is a slight chance of some clouds later today and into tonight.
Fishing has been sluggish due to a high pressure system that has been sitting over us for what feels like forever! We’re not seeing much for hatches unless some clouds roll in, and the trout overall have a bit of lockjaw. There are a handful of midges hatching and a light smattering of olives but overall the surface activity has been slow lately.
Hoppers with droppers are catching fish still, as is rolling heavy nymphs on the bottom of the riffles and runs. Streamers have also been pretty good when the sun is off the water.
Remember that season closes after the 15th of this month! Enjoy some fall weather and get out there and fish!

October 2nd Fishing Report

Sunny, with a high near 74. Breezy, with a southwest wind 8 to 13 mph increasing to 15 to 20 mph in the afternoon. Winds could gust as high as 30 mph.
The difficult fishing continues. The clear water and sunny skies (not to mention the wind) aren’t making things easy out there. Smaller hoppers and beetles with a subtle scud below, or a zebra midge are the go to rigs right now. There are a few olives hatching in the morning, and we have seen slight hints of the appearance of the fall olive hatch later in the day. It isn’t here yet, but we are really hoping with the cooler temperatures that they show up soon to energize the fish!

October 1st Fishing Report

Sunny, with a high near 64. Breezy, with a northwest wind 11 to 16 mph, with gusts as high as 25 mph.
Summer has been hanging on this late season! Things are fishing pretty average due to the clear water and sunny skies. Water temperatures are great area wide, but we need this cooler weather, and hopefully some clouds to get things really going. There are some sparse midge hatches earlier in the morning, and the olives have not really appeared in the afternoon yet. It’s still beetle or small hopper with a dropper time!
REMEMBER SEASON CLOSES AFTER THE 15TH OF OCTOBER! Get out there and fish!

September 27th Fishing Report

A bright and sunny days with a low of 53 and high of 79. A similar, but slightly warmer forecast for the next few days as well. Winds are variable and generally mild, 20mph Saturday. No rain in the forecast.

On the surface, a few tricos are still being spotted, and a few caddis as well. We’ll still need some cooler weather, clouds and drizzle to really trigger the olive hatch. In the meantime, beetles, ants and grasshoppers are still working very well from late morning through mid afternoon. Earlier in the day, nymphing under an indicator or prospecting with a beetle and nymph dropper has been effective. Thin bodied nymphs such as perdigons, Werthers Carmel and Pearl & Orange have been doing the trick in clear water. Pink squirrels, scuds and hotspot pheasant tails have been doing well in stained water. When all else fails… GO BIG. Try bigger foam, and streamers in the evenings.

September 19th Weekend Outlook

A chance of showers and thunderstorms before 4pm, then a slight chance of showers and thunderstorms after 5pm. Mostly sunny, with a high near 85. South wind 6 to 11 mph, with gusts as high as 21 mph. Chance of precipitation is 30%.
On paper today just doesn’t look great, except tonight we are forecasted to get some light rains, and a good gradual cool down over the weekend. Saturday’s high is 84 with some clouds, and Sunday is around 70 degrees with drizzle! It has taken a bit longer than normal, but this could FINALLY be the weekend to kick off fall fishing.
Starting tomorrow, watch for the afternoon olive hatches to re-appear. During the sunny periods, beetles, ants and hoppers will continue to be effective.
Subsurface will change with the clouds in the sky and some (hopefully) stain in the water from small, thin bodied bugs to more scuds and bushy patterns.

September 18th Fishing Reporting

Mostly sunny, with a high near 85. South wind around 8 mph.
Creeks are low and clear. Thankfully the water temps are still good!
It looks like we are forecasted to get out of this unseasonably warm weather on Friday. There might even be some cloud cover and sprinkles later in the weekend.
Once the temperatures drop and we get some clouds or drizzle things should get back on track for late summer/fall (meaning the olive hatch in the afternoon hopefully!)
Until then we are still having success on hoppers or beetles with droppers.
