September 6th Fishing Report

A 20 percent chance of showers after 10am. Partly sunny, with a high near 67. Light and variable wind becoming north 6 to 11 mph in the morning.
Creeks are clear and a bit low, temperatures are in the high 50s to low 60s area wide.
The cloud cover today will keep fishing solid all day long. Tricos in the mornings (although the spinner fall is starting to disappear), smaller terrestrials with a dropper in the daytime, and a slim chance of a late summer olive hatch in the afternoon with this cooler weather.
Fishing has been quite fun drifting a seam sipper, or greased lightning in the seams below the riffles and next to the banks. Dry fly fishing has been better than normal during this time of season on many of our creeks.
When in doubt, put on a beetle with a dropper, or a smaller hopper.
The weather holds all weekend long with Saturday only hitting 67 degrees and Sunday’s high in the mid 70s. A great weekend to be out on the driftless trout streams!

September 5th Fishing Report

A 40 percent chance of showers and thunderstorms, mainly between 9am and 4pm. Partly sunny, with a high near 77. Light and variable wind becoming northwest 5 to 9 mph in the morning. New rainfall amounts of less than a tenth of an inch, except higher amounts possible in thunderstorms.
A little bit of cloud cover today would be excellent for fishing. Things are in quite good shape temperature wise for this time of year. Creeks are clear and a bit low, but still fishing well. The larger creeks are still a bit warm, but the middle sections and headwaters are flowing below 60 degrees.
The next few days will be pleasantly mild, with next week warming up into the lower 80s again unfortunately. Take advantage of this fall weather preview as fishing is usually quite good later in the morning on the first few chilly days.
Terrestrials with droppers will be the ticket, and watch for some afternoon mayfly hatches of small olives as they might show up with the cooler temperatures.

September 4th Fishing Report

Sunny, with a high near 81. South wind 5 to 10 mph.
Fishing has been solid in the mornings lately, and a few more fish being picked up throughout the middle portion of the day, despite the sun shining on the water. Creeks are clear and a bit low with temperatures in the high 50s to low 60s. Prime summer conditions and things are lining up for a good cool down this weekend!
We are still seeing Tricos in the mornings with trout rising to the spinner fall from just after sunrise to about 10 on most days. After that we switch to terrestrials with a dropper, or seam sippers on the surface. There are the beginnings of the fall olive hatch (turn over some rocks and look at the bug life!) but it won’t be here until things cool down a bit more (maybe this weekend?)
The leech and streamer bite is starting to increase with the slowly dropping water temperatures, and mousing at night remains enjoyable.

September 3rd Fishing Report

Sunny, with a high near 77. South wind 6 to 10 mph.
Creeks are clear and looking great. Overnight temperatures are low for this time of season, and this coming weekend looks incredible temperature wise.
We are seeing the tricos start to decline, but we should start to see olives in the afternoon with these cooler temperatures. While the classic match the hatch fishing is slowing down a bit, we are going strong with hoppers or beetles with a dropper. The streamer and leech bite is also starting to pick up a bit.
We’re getting hopeful that this is the transition from the dog days of summer to the later summer fishing!

September 1st Fishing Report

Sunny, with a high near 75. Light and variable wind.
It is still summertime in the Driftless, meaning we are fishing Tricos early then switching to hopper dropper. The fishing still cuts off around mid day, then can pick up again in the evenings. BUT, looking at the long term forecast, the nights are getting chillier and the daytime temperatures are dropping quite a bit too (no days over 80 degrees this week!). Next weekend’s highs are forecasted to be in the mid to high 60s!
What this means, is that the fishing will really start to pick up as water temperatures cool and trout become more comfortable as we slide into late summer. If the cooler temperatures hold on, and we do not get a heat wave, watch for Tricos to start to disappear, and the tiny olives start to show up in the afternoons instead. Your terrestrial and droppers will work all day long regardless

August 31st Fishing Report

Sunny, with a high near 83. West wind 5 to 9 mph.
Creeks are clear to stained with decent temperatures. Things are about to get pretty dang good again as we see air temperatures dropping next week with some overnight lows in the high 40s! This can really get trout fishing in the Driftless back on track and not limited to the morning fishing only we have had the past few weeks.
Watch for trico spinners in the morning, then fish terrestrials with a dropper until mid day. Take a nap, then get out there again in the evening.

August 27 Fishing Report

A 30 percent chance of showers and thunderstorms, mainly between 11am and 1pm. Partly sunny, with a high near 89. West wind 7 to 11 mph.
Hot again today. But it gets back to normal tomorrow.
We still do not recommend fishing when it is this hot. While you can still find trout friendly temperatures (please use your thermometer and avoid anything over 65), it is just taxing to be out there as an angler.

August 25 and 26 heat update.

It is going to be extremely hot and humid Sunday and Monday, and the temperatures will not drop until mid week. We do not recommend fishing under these conditions as they are not safe to be outside for prolonged periods of time, not to mention the stress on the fish with the increase in water temperatures.

Looking ahead, things cool down a bit mid week, and we are supposed to get some rain on Thursday which will get things back to normal.

August 24th Fishing Report

A chance of sprinkles after 4pm. Mostly sunny, with a high near 87. Southeast wind 3 to 6 mph.
Hot and sunny today and through Monday. Please restrict your fishing to sunup to about 10-11 in the morning. Things will slow down as the water temperatures climb after the overnight cooling and it can stress both trout and anglers. Probably not the best 2 or 3 days to be out there.
Remember to use your thermometer and make sure you aren’t fishing water over 65 degrees.

August 23rd Weekend Outlook

Mostly sunny, with a high near 79. South wind 5 to 9 mph.
The main thing to know is that the weekend is going to be unbearably hot again. With heat index pushing 100 degrees. Not only is this not safe for anglers, but the trout can be affected too.
If you are fishing Saturday and Sunday, please limit your time on the water to super early in the morning and stop fishing around 10 or 11.
Please do not stress trout by fishing in water over 65 degrees.
It looks like most of next week will be very hot as well.
