May 24th Fishing Report

Showers and thunderstorms, mainly before 1pm. High near 70. Breezy, with a southeast wind 11 to 17 mph, with gusts as high as 26 mph. Chance of precipitation is 90%. New rainfall amounts between three quarters and one inch possible.
Creeks are clear to slightly stained from recent rains. Only the largest of our creeks are murky still.
So far we are seeing some light rain in the area that will last most of the morning. As of now, nothing that will significantly muddy up the creeks.
Saturday is predicted to be partly cloudy but otherwise clear. Sunday’s forecast is calling for potential heavy rain from 1-2 inches total, then drizzly and overcast on Monday.
Not the best weekend forecast, especially Sunday. This can change quite a bit in the next day or two though.
Fish are eating attractor patterns on the surface as well as foam terrestrials. Hatches of caddis, craneflies, and lighter colored mayflies are around, and can be decent especially in the later afternoon and evenings.
Subsurface fishing has been very good on scuds and brush hogs as well as pearl jams and zebra midges.

May 23rd Fishing Report

A slight chance of showers and thunderstorms between noon and 2pm. Mostly sunny, with a high near 76. Southwest wind 5 to 10 mph. Chance of precipitation is 20%.
Most of our creeks have dropped and cleared to fishable levels by late yesterday. Expect most creeks to be clear to medium stained. Only the largest bodies of water are still muddy enough to be pretty much unfishable.
On the clear creeks, lighter colored flies (mayflies like sulfurs, tan caddis, etc) are hatching on and off throughout the day. If fish are not rising, beetles and ants are good surface searching patterns.
The subsurface bite is quite good now with scuds and smaller, flashy nymphs doing well.

May 22nd Fishing Report

A slight chance of showers between 1pm and 4pm, then a slight chance of showers and thunderstorms after 4pm. Cloudy through mid morning, then gradual clearing, with a high near 69. Breezy, with a west wind 13 to 20 mph, with gusts as high as 29 mph. Chance of precipitation is 20%
Anywhere between an inch and over two fell in our area yesterday, with most of the heavier rains falling early in the day (the big storm pretty much split around vernon county.
The rains were enough to muddy up pretty much all the creeks. This is the first time in over a year we have seen enough rain to flush the creeks a bit! While may creeks remain murky, there is a tiny bit of fishable water out there. The creeks will drop and clear quickly throughout the day.
On the murky creeks a black leech or streamer can catch some fish, as will large scuds and san juan worms. As things dry out a bit, a beetle with a dropper will do well on the clear to stained waters.

May 20th Fishing Report

Showers and thunderstorms, mainly before 2pm. High near 73. Southeast wind 8 to 10 mph becoming west in the afternoon. Winds could gust as high as 18 mph. Chance of precipitation is 90%. New rainfall amounts between a quarter and half of an inch possible.
Some mild to light rain area wide overnight and stretching into today. Some of these storm cells (especially on Tuesday) might finally open up the skies and give us a small flush of the creeks. As of now, it has been a steady, soaking rain which is still excellent news!
We will keep you updated on the status of the creeks, but as of this morning things are quite good with the creeks flowing clear to stained.
Yesterday we saw some excellent success on large beetles and ants. If you watch the ground around you you might notice flying ants and some large beetles crawling around (no, not cicadas). Using a foam indicator beetle with a dropper is an excellent way to catch fish right now!
Hatches are a little sparse, but we are still seeing caddis and cranes, and starting to spot some lighter colored mayflies in the evenings (Cahills).

May 17th Fishing Report

Sunny, with a high near 77. Calm wind becoming south 5 to 9 mph in the morning.
It is INCREDIBLY busy out there this weekend with multiple groups in the area. Streams are crowded on top of normal peak season crowds.
Creeks are clear and low and fish are spooky. Temperatures are good, and there are sparse hatches of caddis and craneflies.
Please know that we have been receiving multiple complaints from landowners of vehicles blocking field access and not pulling off the side of the road completely. When you are parking, please make sure you are completely off the road (pull your mirrors in too please) and not blocking access to land.

And remember to fish nice. If there is a car at an access point, please find another spot and spread out. Check in with other anglers to see where they are headed and do not hop upstream of another angler.

Caddis and craneflies are showing up in bursts lately, with unpredictable rising fish. Ants and beetles are working well where there is overhanging vegetation. The shade and the food source are trout magnets under these conditions.

Subsurface fishing has been solid on smaller, thin bodied nymphs.

May 16th Fishing Report

Showers and thunderstorms, mainly before 1pm. High near 70. South wind 8 to 10 mph becoming west in the afternoon. Chance of precipitation is 80%. New rainfall amounts between a tenth and quarter of an inch, except higher amounts possible in thunderstorms.

Everything is happier in the Driftless when the conditions are like this. A good, soaking rain overnight and cloud cover and drizzle this morning. The rain was enough to get worms active, but not enough to muddy anything up significantly. Creeks remain low and clear to slightly stained with one or two exceptions where some small feeder is putting mud into the system.

On days like this, scuds should be the first subsurface bug you try. Scuds are far more active under these conditions than bright sunny days! Fishing them below a attractor foam fly, or indicator should be good all day long.

The caddis and cranefly hatches will be spotty, but keep an eye out for aggressive rise forms. There are also a handful of large ‘olive’ mayflies hatching, usually towards the end of the day.

May 15th Fishing Report

Sunny, with a high near 70. East wind 6 to 9 mph.
Creeks are low and clear with temperatures in the low to mid 50s area wide.
Fishing has been good overall, with mid day fish eating subsurface and risers tending to be much more common early and late when the sun is off the water.
A beetle or smaller foam pattern with a bead head (or sunken ant!) below has been great, and when you see some overhanging vegetation, try an ant pattern. Fish have been focusing well on ants on these sunnier days.

May 14th Fishing Report

Partly sunny, with a high near 68. East wind 9 to 14 mph, with gusts as high as 22 mph.
Creeks are low and clear with temps in the low to mid 50s area wide.
The haze in the sky yesterday seemed to help with hatches, we had a few more opportunities for rising fish than the clear sky days previously. WIth some light cloud cover today, that will hopefully be the case again.
Caddis and crane flies are the main menu item, with a few olives still hatching the last hour of the day. Watch for rising fish in the morning to rusty spinners too.
If the fish are not rising, try a beetle or small training wheel with a bead head below.

May 13th Fishing Report

A 20 percent chance of showers after 3pm. Widespread haze between noon and 3pm. Mostly cloudy, with a high near 72. North wind 5 to 8 mph.
Creeks are clear to slightly stained and still remain a bit lower than normal. Water temperatures are in the low to mid 50s area wide.
After a hot and sunny Sunday, things are back to normal weather wise. We’re looking at high 60s all week long.
Caddis and craneflies are hatching sporadically. We’re seeing a push of bugs hatching then periods of no flies on the water. Searching with a beetle, hippie stomper, or even chubby chernobyl with a dropper is effective all day long. Switching to ‘match the hatch’ dries only when you see rising fish.
Leeches, streamers, and even mice are catching fish now too, but only on days we have cloud cover or at dusk and dawn when the sun angle is off the water.
