April 24th Fishing Report

Sunny, with a high near 55. Northeast wind 5 to 8 mph.
Creeks are very clear and still low. Temperatures are in the low to mid 50s area wide.
A calmer day wind wise, we should see some caddis hatching mid day. The clear water means fish will be very spooky and skittish. Approach the creeks slowly with as much stealth as you can!
Subsurface fishing in the riffles has been good on thin bodied bugs with a bit of flash as well as caddis pupae. When the hatch happens, fishing a body double or zeppelin caddis dry and twitching it has been very successful.

April 23rd Fishing Report

A chance of showers and thunderstorms. Partly sunny, with a high near 63. Breezy, with a west wind 7 to 12 mph increasing to 15 to 20 mph in the afternoon. Winds could gust as high as 30 mph. Chance of precipitation is 30%.
Creeks are clear and low. Temperatures in the low to mid 50s area wide.
Despite the continued spring winds, fishing has been pretty good recently. On bright and sunny days we are seeing some caddis hatches (both black and tan). On cloudier days the olives are still showing up too.
Subsurface fishing has been great on thin bodied bead heads as well as minnow patterns (lots of bait fish are spawning right now).

April 22nd Fishing Report

A 30 percent chance of showers, mainly after 5pm. Increasing clouds, with a high near 64. Breezy, with a south wind 6 to 11 mph increasing to 18 to 23 mph in the afternoon. Winds could gust as high as 33 mph.
Creeks are clear and still low. Temperatures are in the low 50s. We are getting a spinner fall (rusty spinners size 16/18 are good) at dawn, then switching to bead heads early in the day. Most creeks are seeing some caddis with fish eating them around lunchtime and sometimes extending into the evening. If fish aren’t rising, fishing a olive or brown training wheel (spring stonefly) with a thin bodied bead head below is quite good right now.
Leeches and streamers are solid as baitfish and creek lamprey are spawning right now, but are always more successful on cloudier days.

April 19th Fishing Report

Increasing clouds, with a high near 47. Breezy, with a west wind 8 to 13 mph increasing to 18 to 23 mph in the afternoon. Winds could gust as high as 33 mph.
Creeks are clear to very slightly stained. Temperatures are right around 50 degrees.
With the cooler weekend, things will start a bit later in the morning. No need to get up at dawn to fish!
We are still seeing olives and some caddis hatching as well as a few craneflies and spring stoneflies too.
Subsurface fishing has been very good on leeches (especially olive as the creek lamprey are spawning) and scuds when clouds are in the sky, and thread frenchies and other thin bodied bead heads when the sun is high in the sky.

April 18th Fishing Report

Showers, mainly before 3pm. Steady temperature around 48. West wind 5 to 9 mph. Chance of precipitation is 80%. New precipitation amounts between a tenth and quarter of an inch possible.
Drizzle and some locally heavier rains have the creeks slightly up, but still clear to slightly stained. We’re not out of the drought yet, but things are MUCH better and we are breathing a sigh of relief.
Depending on the conditions, we are seeing olives, caddis, and spring stoneflies on the surface. Subsurface fishing has been best with scuds and purple drank on cloudy days, and thread frenchies and spanish bullets on sunny days.

April 17th Fishing Report

A chance of showers and thunderstorms before 2pm, then a slight chance of showers between 2pm and 3pm. Cloudy, with a steady temperature around 55. Breezy, with a west wind 7 to 12 mph increasing to 17 to 22 mph in the afternoon. Winds could gust as high as 33 mph. Chance of precipitation is 40%. New rainfall amounts between a tenth and quarter of an inch, except higher amounts possible in thunderstorms.
We received anywhere from 1/2 to 1.5 inches of rain in the area in the past 24 hours. WIth only a couple of exceptions, this is not enough to muddy anything up or make any creeks unfishable. Today’s rains look like they will be the same. Some valleys will get a decent rainfall, while others just a sprinkle. This much needed moisture is soaking directly into the ground and slowly pulling us closer to the end of our moderate drought status.
Fish are happily eating caddis, and a few olives and spring stoneflies on the surface. Subsurface is becoming a free for all with fish eating pretty much any nymph, but seeming to favor thicker bodied bugs on cloudy days, and thin bugs with flash on sunny days.

April 16th Fishing Report

A chance of showers and thunderstorms, then showers and possibly a thunderstorm after 4pm. Some of the storms could produce heavy rainfall. High near 63. Windy, with an east wind 13 to 18 mph increasing to 24 to 29 mph in the afternoon. Winds could gust as high as 44 mph. Chance of precipitation is 80%. New rainfall amounts between a half and three quarters of an inch possible.
Forecast is for the rains to come later in the day and overnight. Up to a couple of inches is predicted. This is MUCH needed rain, and unless it comes all at once the ground will instantly soak most of it up.
The creeks are low and clear right now with temperatures in the low 50s. The warm spell is over and temperatures are back to normal. With the cooler and cloudy weather we expect to see more olives and spring stoneflies than caddis over the next day or two.
Subsurface fishing will be great with the clouds in the sky. Scuds, leeches, and small streamers will be back into play in a big way while the creeks are shaded.

April 15th Fishing Report

Sunny, with a high near 69. Northeast wind 5 to 8 mph.
This mini heat wave has things going in the Driftless. Caddis are popping early in the day and a smattering of blue winged olives are still around.
Subsurface fishing has been fantastic on thread frenchies and spanish bullets. When the sun comes off the water, scuds and leech fishing will pick back up.

April 13th Fishing Report

Increasing clouds, with a high near 70. Breezy, with a south wind 5 to 10 mph increasing to 12 to 17 mph in the afternoon. Winds could gust as high as 25 mph.
Creeks are clear and still low, with temperatures right around 50 degrees area wide. The mornings have been just a bit slow lately, no need to get up at dawn to fish if you do not want! If you let things warm up just a bit, the fish are more willing. Nymphing early in the day, with thread frenchies and caddis larvae/pupae being the foods of choice. Mid day we are seeing a mix of olives and some caddis (both black and tan) getting fish to eat. Remember a splashy, aggressive rise means caddis and a sipping rise usually means mayflies this time of year.
Leeches and streamers are solid, and catching some nicer trout, but you will have much more success when the sun is off the water or clouds are in the sky if you are fishing larger flies.

April 12th Fishing Report

Mostly sunny, with a high near 56. Breezy, with a northwest wind 9 to 14 mph increasing to 15 to 20 mph in the morning. Winds could gust as high as 29 mph.

Creeks are still very low and clear with good temperatures (around low 50s) area wide. We are seeing olives daily right around mid day,

While the fishing is much easier when the sun is off the water, the slight bump in water temperature triggers the flies to hatch. Both the spring olives and upcoming caddis hatch seem to be better in the afternoon!

The exception, there was a band of heavy flushing rains running almost in a straight line North and South of La Farge last night. These creeks flushed out and are stained first thing this morning. They are fishable and will continue to drop through the day, but will be in EXCELLENT shape the next few days thanks to the flush and stain.

If you do not see fish rising, fish smaller thin bodied bugs or caddis larvae/pupae this time of year. Scuds, leeches and streamers will do better when the sun is off the water.

Fishing has been good, but difficult due to spooky fish and clear water. Be patient, and approach the creeks as stealthily as possible.
