Fishing Report

Sunny, with a high near 81. Northwest wind 9 to 11 mph, with gusts as high as 20 mph.
Creeks are clear and low with temperatures still in the low 60s. After a couple of incredibly hot days we do expect the water temps to drop a bit with more normal weather. (Next week looks great!)
Fish early, fish late, find shade and avoid the mid day sun. Guides have been having success on ants and beetles and even a few small hoppers on the surface during the day! Very early and very late we are seeing some small, pmd or cahill colored (green-ish to white) mayflies coming off and fish feeding on them.
Subsurface fishing has been good below the riffles on thinner bodied bugs like perdigons and food.

A 40 percent chance of showers and thunderstorms, mainly between 3pm and 5pm. Mostly sunny, with a high near 93. Heat index values as high as 101. Southwest wind 7 to 14 mph. New rainfall amounts of less than a tenth of an inch, except higher amounts possible in thunderstorms.
Very hot and humid again today. The second day in a row of hot temperatures has the creeks unseasonably warm. While there are decent water temperatures to be found, it is probably a good idea to sit today out. Either that or fish 5-9 in the morning and evening making sure you use your thermometer. Anything over 65 will be poor fishing.
Keep your fingers crossed that the rains hit as that will instantly cool things down.
The good news, is that we are looking at more stable temperatures the rest of the week and back to a bit cooler over the weekend and into next week!

Creeks are clear to slightly stained with water temperatures right around 60.
This heat will slow things down a bit as bright sun, clear skies, and rising water temperatures are not the trout’s favorite. It is about time to use a thermometer. Anything over 65 will be slow fishing and much higher than that, can be deadly to trout.
Thankfully it is only a day or two of punishing heat, after that it will be warm, but just a bit more than normal for late spring/early summer.
The only silver lining to the heat is that we should start seeing more grasshoppers out there! The past week we have started to see juvenile hoppers on the banks.

Fishing has been very good lately with trout sipping mayflies and midges in the mornings, then switching to terrestrials later in the morning, then back to caddis, craneflies and lighter colored mayflies in the later part of the day and into the evening.
Subsurface fishing has been solid on smaller and a bit more subtle patterns.

Sunny, with a steady temperature around 78. Breezy, with a west wind 6 to 11 mph increasing to 13 to 18 mph. Winds could gust as high as 36 mph.
The weather has stabiliized a bit towards normal for late spring. It isn’t blisterning hot again until Monday.
The recent rains do have some creeks muddy, but there is plenty of fishable water and even some clear creeks out there.
We have started to see some small hoppers! We’re still doing well fishing beetles with bead heads below (the pearl jam has been excellent!) and still seeing trout rise to lighter colored mayflies the last couple hours of the day.
It is about time to start thinking about checking water temperatures. While it is not an issue right now, as things warm up into the summertime make sure you are keeping track of where the water temps are. Anything over 65 will be poor fishing and much hotter than that can be lethal to trout.

Showers and thunderstorms, mainly after 3pm. Some of the storms could produce heavy rainfall. High near 82. Southwest wind 8 to 13 mph, with gusts as high as 26 mph. Chance of precipitation is 90%. New rainfall amounts between a half and three quarters of an inch possible.
Not so hot out there today. Creeks are still showing some stain north of the shop, while everything near and south clear.
The forecast is looking a bit ominous, with up to an inch of rain area wide. We will keep you updated.

Partly sunny, then gradually becoming sunny and hot, with a high near 95. Heat index values as high as 104. Breezy, with a southeast wind 7 to 12 mph becoming south 13 to 18 mph in the afternoon. Winds could gust as high as 30 mph.
The rain yesterday was not as bad as it looked on the radar from Viroqua and south. North of the fly shop got hit pretty hard by the rains. Expect clearer water the farther south you go from the shop.
However, the weather changed to a massive hot and humid mess today! It is supposed to be over 100 with the heat index. It’s probably a better idea to stay home and stay cool then be on the trout streams today!
Tonight and into tomorrow is calling for warmer temperatures (not as hot as today,) then some rain to cool things down and get the heat out of the area. Things get back to later spring normal by Thursday.

Since we have had rain recently, and are forecasted for a bit more tomorrow, this brief heat wave should not impact water temperatures too much.

UPDATE 11:05 a.m. The radar looked much worse than reality. So far we have had a good soaking rain hit the area for about 10-15 minutes, and the heavy part of the storm is ‘over’ More rain fell north of Viroqua, south was a bit clearer. This means that the creeks should hold up very well with only a couple valleys getting heavy rain showers. The rest will be clear to slightly stained. So far, there is nothing backing this band of rain up on the radar.

We’re tracking the storm right now. It is the new weather pattern of brief, but potentially heavy rains. Once the storm passes we will let you know what the rainfall totals were. If you are around today, go fish now before the storm hits!

Tomorrow is going to be over 100 with the heat index.

UPDATE 2:30 Rain is over now and only dumped about a quarter to a half an inch area wide. In other words nothing here is too muddy outside the lowest sections of creeks.

Mostly cloudy, with a high near 74. Light and variable wind becoming southwest 5 to 10 mph in the morning. Winds could gust as high as 18 mph. Chance of precipitation is 70%. New rainfall amounts between a tenth and quarter of an inch, except higher amounts possible in thunderstorms.
The rains so far have avoided us as of first thing this morning (they are mostly north of I-90). Looks like we will be hit with a brief band that isn’t forecasted to dump much rain at all. We will keep you posted, but it is looking good!
With the cloud cover we are using a few thicker bodied bead heads and scuds below terrestrials. In the evening the sulphur hatch has been quite good too. Having a few sulfurs and a few PMDs for a lighter colored mayfly is not a bad idea through the rest of the month!

Creeks are clear to stained with good temperatures for springtime. Weather is warm-ish, but not doing anything to slow the fishing down! There are some lower sections still showing a healthy stain, but overall everything is fishable to crystal clear.
We are seeing good numbers of larger sulfurs (size 12) as well as some grey caddis around daily. Craneflies are out, but a bit sparse. If you see random, splashy rises tie on a cranefly and skitter it!
Subsurface fishing (with a beetle above) is best with thinner bodied patterns right now like perdigons and spanish bullets.
