May 18th Fishing Report

Showers, with thunderstorms also possible after 5pm. High near 68. Southeast wind 8 to 15 mph, with gusts as high as 26 mph. Chance of precipitation is 90%. New rainfall amounts between a tenth and quarter of an inch, except higher amounts possible in thunderstorms.
Today will be a bit windy as a storm system blows in. The much needed cloud cover and (hopefully) rain will do wonders for our fishery. Right now the water is very low and clear. The clouds in the sky should make trout a bit happier.
Caddis and craneflies are still the main thing on the menu right now. Fishing to rising fish in the afternoon and into the evenings has been quite fun.
Subsurface fishing has been great on spanish bullets when the sun is out, and on thicker bodied bugs and scuds when the clouds are overhead.

May 17th Fishing Report

Mostly sunny, with a high near 75. Light east wind increasing to 6 to 11 mph in the morning. Winds could gust as high as 20 mph.
Today is another sunny day with super clear water. Fishing can be difficult mid day as the fish are spooky! Clouds and rain are coming this week which should get the fish in a much better mood.
Caddis are the main hatch along with some craneflies and mayflies. On the surface, terrestrials are starting to work very well too. Subsurface fishing has been quite good on thicker bodied bugs with a collar. Purple Drank, Jiggy brush hog, She Ra…

May 15th Fishing Report

A slight chance of showers between 1pm and 4pm, then a chance of showers and thunderstorms after 4pm. Mostly cloudy, with a high near 63. South wind 7 to 9 mph, with gusts as high as 18 mph. Chance of precipitation is 30%.
Very light drizzle last night was only enough to wet the grass. Creeks remain very low and clear. Thankfully we have some cloud cover today which should make the fish a bit more comfortable.
Caddis and craneflies are the main menu item on the surface. Subsurface has been great on caddis, purple drank, and spanish bulelts.

May 14th Fishing Report

Increasing clouds, with a high near 66. South wind 5 to 11 mph, with gusts as high as 20 mph.
It might sound off, but we are very much looking forward to the clouds and drizzle tomorrow! Our creeks are very low and clear (thankfully water temperatures are still in the low to mid 50s) which is making the fish extremely spooky in anything but broken water.
Hatches are happening daily but fish have been reluctant to rise with the sun shining directly down on them. They are much happier in the evening or under cloud cover. Caddis, both black and tan, are on the menu along with craneflies. There are also so crazy small midges that fish will feed on (use a tiny greased lightning to try to catch the midge feeders).
Subsurface fishing has been solid on purple drank, brush hogs, hot spot PTs, scuds, and thread frenchies. Fish these below a foam pattern and cast to the head of the pool in the water that is coming off the riffles.
Do not neglect fishing in the riffles themselves! A large parachute adams (12 or 14) with a zebra midge tied below it can be absolutely deadly this time of year.

Going into a busy weekend, please remember to treat each other and landowners with respect.
If there is a car at an access point, please drive to another spot.
Anglers fish upstream, do not hop in the water upstream of another angler without checking in with them first. See where they are going and how far.
Do not block gates, driveways, or field accesses.
Do not walk across property that isn’t completely public. Streambank easements are for a few feet of bank, they do not extend into fields.
Have fun, and enjoy the fishery!

May 13th Fishing Report

Mostly sunny, with a high near 66. Calm wind becoming southwest 5 to 7 mph in the morning.
Creeks are very low and clear. Temperatures are in the low 50s.
The bright, sunny skies and low, clear water are doing us no favors right now. Fish are extremely spooky.
Caddis are the main menu item right now along with craneflies. With the cooler mornings, fishing has not been great early. Then when the sun is shining directly onto the creeks mid day, fishing has not been great (find broken water and fish shady undercut banks). When the sun starts to dip a bit in the later afternoon things can come alive.
We’re fishing a hippie stomper and a dropper during the day. When fish are rising throwing some caddis patterns (sedgehammer has been great lately), craneflies and even some larger mayflies will get rising fish to eat. Do not forget to move your flies! Fish are used to their meals being alive and moving a bunch. The subtle twitch or skitter can be the trigger to get fussy trout to eat.

May 12th Fishing Report

Mostly sunny, with a high near 62. Light west wind.
Creeks are very low and very clear. Fish are very spooky. While we are fishing dry/dropper in the choppy water below the riffles during the day, the best fishing is when the sun is off the water in the evenings.
Caddis and craneflies as well as a handful of mayflies are out there hatching, but most fish will not feed on the surface until the sun goes away.

May 11th Fishing Report

Sunny, with a high near 58. North wind 5 to 7 mph.
Creeks are low and clear with temperatures right around 50 degrees.
The cold nights have things starting a bit later in the day. There is no need to get up really early to fish right now.
We’re starting the day throwing nymphs below a hippie stomper or training wheel. It isn’t crazy action on the surface early, but there will be a few fish eating the foam indicator fly.
After mid day some fish will start rising to caddis (black and a few tan), but lately the action has been best subsurface. The best fishing of the day has been the last few hours of light as the sun’s angle dips a bit and the creeks finally get a bit of shade.

May 10th Fishing Report

A chance of sprinkles before noon, then a chance of sprinkles after 2pm. Partly sunny, with a high near 55. East wind 5 to 9 mph becoming north in the afternoon.
Creeks are low and clear with temperatures in the low to mid 50s. Despite some recent drizzle the past week water levels are quite low and the fish are very spooky when the sun is shining on the water. The best fishing is early and late and when clouds are overhead.
Caddis, midges, and even a few late olives are hatching along with some craneflies. Fish are rising in the later afternoon (again, more risers in the shade) through the evening.
With the temperatures warming up, watch for more terrestrial action to happen through the week. Ants, and beetles are out and about and fish can key in on them.
Nymphing has been the most productive lately with scuds, brush hogs, purple drank, and hot spot PTs leading the pack.

May 7th Fishing Report

Sunny, with a high near 56. Northwest wind 7 to 13 mph, with gusts as high as 21 mph.
Creeks are clear to stained with temperatures in the low 50s.
The nights are still chilly enough that you are able to sleep in an extra hour or so and won’t miss much of anything. Fish overall seem to get moving around 9. The sun has brought back the caddis hatches in the later morning and through the evening. They haven’t been super thick, but fish are feeding on them as well as craneflies during the day.
Subsurface fishing has been great lately with fish feeding on everything from perdigons to the pork chop express. Just keep changing up and the fish will let you know what they want!
We are still fishing our nymphs under a hippie stomper or Cheeto beetle. These buoyant and high visibility patterns will get a few fish eating them throughout the day.
When the sun is off the water, do not hesitate to throw a leech or streamer. Fish are in a good mood when there is shade and will chase some bigger bugs this time of season.

May 6th Fishing Report

Increasing clouds, with a high near 57. Northwest wind 5 to 13 mph, with gusts as high as 23 mph.
Creeks are clear to stained. The main branch of the Timber Coulee and the West Fork continue to show some heavy staining. Everything else is in excellent shape. Even the heavily stained waters had about 6 inches of visibility yesterday so they are still fishable.
Search for that slightly stained water! Trout are much happier when there are clouds in the sky and the water has a bit of color!
The worms are out in force today after the rain, do not be afraid to fish worm patterns this morning.
Caddis and craneflies are the top items on the menu on the surface, watch for splashy rises and you know fish are feeding on them.
Subsurface fishing has been good on pretty much everything, with fish favoring scuds, caddis larvae, and pink squirrels (thicker bodied patterns).
On the creeks with the heavy stain, fish a leech, worm farm, or larger scud.
