March 20th Fishing Report

Mostly clear, with a low around 38. South wind 10 to 14 mph, with gusts as high as 23 mph.
Today and Sunday are sunny and windy. Adding to the crystal clear creeks this means fish are fussy. Approach with stealth, and consider sizing down a bit on your bugs mid day.
Midges are around, and a few more olives show up each day. Fish are rising in the afternoons. We have also started to see some spring stoneflies (which is why foam flies are working!).
Subsurface is best on small, thin bodied bugs. When the clouds roll in, then switch to a scud or purple drink.

March 19th Fishing Report

Sunny, with a high near 55. Calm wind becoming southeast 5 to 7 mph in the morning.

Creeks are clear and flowing a touch on the low side. Water temperatures in the low to mid 40s.

Fishing has been good as the snow is (once again) off the banks and we do not have to worry about a major cooling of the creeks or muddy of the water due to snowmelt.

We are still seeing midges hatching almost daily. It might take a little leg work to find the pods of happy fish, but they are out there around mid day! We have also spotted some BWOs and some spring stoneflies too.

Subsurface fishing has been good on pretty much anything. From the match the hatch thin bodied bugs to the thicker bodied patterns like scuds…. As long as you get a good drift, fish are eating!

Guides have been fishing foam dries with great success. A size 12 hippie (check out the new irresistible style hippie stomper!) with a bead head below has been deadly, especially when you twitch the hippie.

The weekend looks good (some wind coming in on Sunday) with very pleasant spring temperatures. Just be aware that the water is VERY clear right now, and with the sunny skies, fish are quite skittish.

March 18th Fishing Report

Sunny, with a high near 48. Breezy, with a northeast wind 18 to 20 mph, with gusts as high as 36 mph.
Creeks are clear and flowing a touch low. Water temperatures are in the low 40s.
Fish are eating on the surface from mid morning to afternoon on midges, smaller foam flies, and klinkhammers.
Subsurface they are happily munching on pretty much anything! We are in the middle of our midge hatch, BWOs are coming very soon, and we have even seen quite a bit of interest in caddis larvae lately.
Leeches and streamers are effective as always, but the crystal clear water makes it difficult to fish anything but the broken water without spooking fish.
Snow is trickling into the creeks in the later afternoon slowing fishing down. You can get a solid 3/4 day in right now though starting at about 9 am.

March 17th Fishing Report

A chance of rain, snow, and freezing rain before noon, then a slight chance of rain between noon and 2pm. Cloudy, with a high near 41. Calm wind becoming northeast 5 to 9 mph in the afternoon. Chance of precipitation is 30%.
There is still some snow on the banks. It is melting slowly again meaning fishing is decent until the melt hits the creeks and drops the water temperatures.
Tomorrow will be warmer and sunnier and should get rid of most of the snow on the banks again! We will keep you posted on clarity etc, but we’re thinking it should not mess the creeks up much.
As odd as it sounds, the warmer weather and sun is helpful in the winter. As the creeks warm up the bugs get active and the fishing gets better.
Fish are eating midges on the surface mid day, and eating leeches and bead heads throughout the day. We have started to catch fish on foam patterns typically in darker body colors (the spring stoneflies are beginning to make an appearance).
Creeks are clear with temperatures in the low 40s.

March 16th Fishing Report

Mostly cloudy, with a high near 39. Calm wind.
It snowed a few inches yesterday. It should not be enough to make things messy, but we do still have to watch water temperatures in the later part of the day as snowmelt enters the creeks again. We do not expect this snow to last too long.
Midges and winter stones are still around, and we should see olives again once it warms up. Fishing leeches early, dry/dropper later in the morning, then switching to match the hatch if you find rising fish is the rhythm right now.

March 15th Fishing Report

Snow. The snow could be heavy at times. High near 34. Breezy, with an east wind 16 to 18 mph, with gusts as high as 30 mph. Chance of precipitation is 100%. Total daytime snow accumulation of 2 to 4 inches possible.
Creeks are in great shape as we avoided any runoff. Today’s snow should not do much at all to mess up the fishing (outside of the winds today!).
MIdges and winter stoneflies are still the main item on the menu. There are fish rising daily and many are even eating foam flies on the surface! We have been fishing a hippie stomper or training wheel in a darker body color with good success.

March 12th Fishing Report

Sunny, with a high near 46. Northwest wind around 6 mph.
Sunny and mild again tomorrow then a storm starts to roll in Sunday evening.
Creeks are clear and flowing a touch low with temperatures in the low 40s. Midges are hatching well, and some winter stoneflies are around too. Olives are expected to show up at anytime now that most of the snow is gone and water temperatures are starting to stabilize a bit.
You can fish a bit earlier and a bit later in the day now too since ‘runoff’ is mostly done.
Fish are a bit spooky with the clear water and clear sky, so approach your spots with stealth and caution!
Try a hippie stomper with a purple drank or scud tied below it. You will be surprised at the fish hitting the larger foam dry right now!
Subsurface fishing has been good on pretty much anything. Fish leeches and streamers early, then as things warm up a bit switch to nymphing below the riffles.

March 11th Fishing Report

Mostly cloudy through mid morning, then gradual clearing, with a high near 49. Breezy, with a west wind 11 to 16 mph, with gusts as high as 30 mph.
Creeks muddied up a bit yesterday with the rain and hot temperatures. With the cooling of temperatures muddy snowmelt should no longer be an issue.
Fishing has still be solid in the mornings into the afternoon with things slowing down as temperatures drop int he later afternoon. With most of the snow gone, the window of opportunity opens a bit more past mid day as snowmelt becomes less of a factor in changing the water temperatures.
Midges and winter stoneflies are still hatching and fish are rising throughout the day on some of our creeks.
Subsurface fishing has broken wide open with fish still eating the thin bodied bugs, but also switching to scuds and thicker bodied patterns too!
Leeches and streamers have been quite good, especially in the lower sections of creeks.

March 10th Fishing Report

Showers likely, with thunderstorms also possible after 4pm. Patchy fog before 10am. Otherwise, cloudy, with a high near 64. Breezy, with a south wind 11 to 21 mph, with gusts as high as 37 mph. Chance of precipitation is 60%. New rainfall amounts between a tenth and quarter of an inch, except higher amounts possible in thunderstorms.
It has drizzled this morning, nothing too horrible, but with the warmer temperatures and this light rain we might see some mud later today.
So far, the creeks have held up perfectly. Clear to a very slight stain area wide. Temperatures are in the low 40s and fish couldn’t be happier. We are still running into the situation of having cold snowmelt slow things down in the afternoons. Get out there 8-9ish!
Stoneflies and midges are still the main menu item both surface and subsurface, however fish are starting to eat thicker bodied bugs and chasing larger streamers too. The oddball bug is the chubby chernobyl and hippie stomper. These larger foam patterns should not be working this early, but the fish are eating them very well the past couple of days!

March 9th Fishing Report

Mostly sunny, with a high near 64. Breezy, with a south wind 9 to 14 mph increasing to 16 to 21 mph in the afternoon. Winds could gust as high as 32 mph.
Yesterday the creeks were spared from muddy water. Area wide, there was not enough melt to blow things out and most creeks are crystal clear.
With the heat today and the potential rain tomorrow things have a chance at muddying up a bit. We will keep you posted.
In the meantime, fishing was quite good yesterday! Fish were rising early and continuing to feed on the surface until mid afternoon. Midges and winter stoneflies were everywhere along with the random BWO.
Nick had his client catching fish on a size 12 training wheel!
Subsurface fishing is trending towards more thick bodied patterns such as scuds and pink squirrels. While the small thin bodied patterns are less popular, they are still essential on the clear and slow flowing areas.
