Some rain last night (half an inch or so near Viroqua, a little less south of us) cooled things down and refreshed the creeks. Water will be clear to stained this morning, and we are forecasted for a bit more rain on and off through the day and the week. If anything heavy hits and muddys the creeks up, we will let you know.
Throughout the day, we will continue fishing indicator dries with bead heads below, or swing leeches and small streamers below the riffles. At night we are still seeing some sulphur mayflies hatching (although the hatch is slowing down a bit in some places).

Our mini heat wave was blunted a bit yesterday thanks to cloud cover. The sun never had much of a chance to shine onto the creeks and water temperatures stayed pretty stable.
Today will be hot and sunny and pretty uncomfortable with the humidity. Again, we get a small silver lining in that whatever rise in water temperatures will be reset by rains tonight and into tomorrow.
So, while water temperatures may pop up a bit temporarily they should stabilize again by tomorrow!

Hot and potentially stormy on and off until Wednesday. If you fish, please fish first thing in the morning then be diligent about checking water temperatures. They have been pretty stable up until this short heat wave. Things normalize (hopefully) after some rains Tuesday night and into Wednesday.
Our recommendation: Chase some panfish on your local ponds, or other warm water species and give trout a couple days break.

Creeks are clear and still a touch low with temperatures thankfully holding stable in the high 50s for now.
The warm weather moving in (hot early next week) will slow things down mid day, focus your fishing energy early in the day (rusty spinners, beetles with a dropper) and later at night (sulfurs, cahills, egg laying caddis). A mid day siesta is a wonderful thing!
If any of the rains hit through the weekend it will help cool things down significantly.

Light rains (and some locally heavy) have the creeks in good shape for a warmer weekend. Hotter and humid than normal.
Yesterday’s heat was chased away by a light rain in most areas (a bit heavier south of Viroqua). The creeks are still all in great shape though, clear to slightly stained.
The warmer weather is playing havoc with the temperatures with things bouncing up and down throughout the week. Make sure you use your thermometer and watch the trends. Anything over 65 is poor fishing, and a quickly rising temperature usually means fishing will slow down quite a bit.
While we have not seen hoppers yet, fish are responding to training wheels and large beetles (and small ants too!) especially in shaded areas. Putting a bead head below is very effective.
On the surface, we are still seeing sporadic cranefly hatches as well as our lighter colored mayflies at night.

A little cloud cover and some decent weather today! Fishing has been good as the creeks are all clear and a bit low with temperatures right around 60. The cloud cover will make trout more comfortable today.
We’re still seeing lighter colored mayflies in the evenings hatching, and throughout the day tossing smaller foam attractors and beetles with bead heads below.
As the hatch starts in the early evening, switching to emergers (seam sippers work well here) then dries can be fun!

Incredibly nice weather today and tomorrow, with a warm front coming in mid week bringing some wind and potential evening rains. Not a terrible weather forecast overall for the week.
Creeks are still a touch low and running clear. Temperatures are right around 60 area wide. The trout’s menu has not changed much since last week. Smaller terrestrials (ants and beetles especially on the breezy days!), crane flies, and lighter colored mayflies hatching in the evenings. Watch for mayfly spinners in the very early morning with trout sipping on the surface before the sun gets too high in the sky.
Subsurface fishing has been quite good on thin patterns with a bit of flash lately.
The night time anglers have started to report some success on leeches, streamers and mice once the sun starts to set!

We’re getting complaints more and more about anglers getting cut off, high holed, and crowded.

If there is a car at an access point, drive to another access point. There is plenty of room to spread out on public and accessible water in the area.
Do not access the creek upstream of other anglers (high holing), checking in with other anglers is ok, but do not hop above and ruin the fishing for others.
There is no reason to trespass. Conservation easements are bankside access only. You are not legally allowed to cross fields.
Do no block gates, farm access roads or driveways. Park off the street, pull in your mirrors and leave room for cars and farm equipment to pass.

We have lots of water, and there is no reason to crowd. Just treat other anglers like you would want to be treated,

With the rain, we are looking at potentially happier fish eating foam indicator patterns with bead heads below. Subsurface flies can be a mix of thin and flashy, and thicker scud type patterns in this weather.
On the surface, watch for lighter colored mayflies the last few hours of the day.
