September 20th Fishing Report

A 20 percent chance of showers and thunderstorms after 2pm. Mostly cloudy, with a high near 79. South wind 5 to 10 mph.
Today and tomorrow are the warmest days in a while (it cools down again heading into the weekend). The creeks are still extremely low and clear, but temperatures are very trout friendly! Fish are eating hoppers (with droppers) all day long, and rising to olives in the later afternoon and evenings.
Season ends after October 15th. It’s time to get out there and fish before it all closes down in the Driftless!

September 19th Fishing Report

A 20 percent chance of showers and thunderstorms before 9am. Partly sunny, with a high near 73. South wind 9 to 15 mph, with gusts as high as 24 mph.
Creeks are still extremely low and clear. Even with the little rain last night we’re still needing more!
Fishing has slowly picked up a bit. Hoppers are doing well mid day and into the evening and we are seeing olives later on in the day that have a few fish rising.
Focus on the riffles and drops right below them. The trout seem to be gorging on bugs drifting down from that shallow water!

September 17th Fishing Report

Sunny, with a high near 71. East wind 5 to 8 mph becoming north in the afternoon.
Absolutely beautiful weather continues the next few days. Because of the super dry year, we are starting to see leaves turn on the trees already and despite the extremely low flows, trout have been pretty happy lately. It is not the best fishing the Driftless has to offer, but seeing how our season is almost over (closes after the 15th of October until January), it is about time to chase a trout or two before the off season hits.
Mornings are a mix of trout rising to midges and eating terrestrials with droppers.
Afternoons are starting to fish very well with terrestrials continuing to catch fish, as well as the late season tiny olives hatching most every day.

September 14th Fishing Report

Areas of fog before 8am. Otherwise, sunny, with a high near 75. Calm wind becoming south 5 to 9 mph in the morning.
Creeks are EXTREMELY low and clear which is hurting the fishing, especially on the small headwater creeks. The middle and lower sections are fishing well as water temperatures are cool to cold area wide. Fishing is slowly picking up as the olive hatch strengthens and terrestrials continue to get fish to eat.
It is not the best fishing the Driftless can offer, but the cool weather and partial cloud cover is helping things quite a bit!

This is also the beginning of the end of season sales! Select rods, reels, waders, boots, apparel and more on sale now!

September 13th Fishing Report

Mostly cloudy, then gradually becoming sunny, with a high near 66. Northeast wind 5 to 7 mph.
Creeks are still extremely low due to our ongoing drought. The little rain we received yesterday was not enough to change the flow levels unfortunately.
The good news is that the fishing is picking up with the cooler temperatures recently. This trend is going to continue through the week.
Olives have started to appear and fishing to sipping fish is not uncommon in the afternoon and evening now. Terrestrials are still fishing strong, and the subsurface game is picking up on purple drank, scuds, and pheasant tails.

September 12th Fishing Report

Scattered showers and thunderstorms before 3pm, then showers likely and possibly a thunderstorm between 3pm and 5pm, then scattered showers and thunderstorms after 5pm. Areas of fog before 9am. Otherwise, partly sunny, with a high near 68. Calm wind becoming west 5 to 8 mph in the afternoon. Chance of precipitation is 60%. New rainfall amounts of less than a tenth of an inch, except higher amounts possible in thunderstorms.
That a lot of words to say it probably isn’t going to rain today!
We’re still in a major drought and the creeks are very low and clear with spooky trout! The water temperatures are no longer an issue as this cooler late summer weather settles in. It is incredibly pleasant to be outside right now.
The fishing is still difficult, although getting better daily. The low flows are still holding things back, but terrestrials are strong, and we are starting to see the beginning of the BWO hatch show up later in the day.

September 11th Fishing Report

A 20 percent chance of showers after 2pm. Mostly cloudy, with a high near 67. Light northeast wind becoming north 5 to 9 mph in the morning.
Things have cooled down significantly and are forecasted to stay cool through the week and into the weekend.
Terrestrial action has started to pick up with smaller grasshoppers (morrish pink hopper!) and beetles plopped near undercuts getting fish to finally come out from under cover and eat. Tying a small beadhead below is an excellent way to fish.
We have started to see some olives in the evenings as well. While we won’t call it the hatch yet, there are some noses poking up eating emergers in the riffles and the runs below.
All in all, the water temperatures are now to the point that things should be solid on a daily basis. Unfortunately, the extreme drought and low water levels are still holding the fishing back a little bit compared to where it normally is this time of year. However, it is MUCH better and getting better daily.

September 8th Fishing Report

A slight chance of showers before 9am, then a chance of sprinkles between 9am and 10am. Cloudy through mid morning, then gradual clearing, with a high near 72. Calm wind becoming north around 5 mph in the morning. Chance of precipitation is 20%.
Creeks are extremely low and clear, but with the cooler weather the temperatures are very good right now!
Terrestrials are still the main menu item and a well placed beetle or hopper plopped near the riffle and close to the bank gives you a good shot at some aggressive fish.
We’re also starting to do well again on droppers. Purple drank, purdygons and small coulee scuds are getting fish in the runs below the riffles.
In the evenings we have started to see some olives. While we will not call it a hatch yet, there are fish sipping dries in the riffles and runs.
The long term forecast is looking very trout friendly. Cool temperatures and we may even get a bit of rain early next week!

September 7th Fishing Report

Mostly cloudy, with a high near 68. North wind 6 to 9 mph.
While we still have had little to no rain and the creeks are extremely low, this cooler trend has trout in a much better mood than the past month (or 4!)
The low temperatures tonight and tomorrow night are not even reaching 50 degrees.
The cloud cover has helped a ton too. Fish are more comfortable in the ultra low and clear water, attacking smaller terrestrials and sipping some dries in the evenings.
While overall fishing is still not as great as it normally is, this weather pattern (which should hold through early next week with only Saturday approaching 80 degrees) is a blessing for trout fishing during this drought season!

September 6th Fishing Report

A 20 percent chance of showers. Cloudy, with a high near 71. Breezy, with a northwest wind 9 to 16 mph.
We did not get any rain last night, and the creeks remain extremely low and clear. The good news is that the cooler weather for the next few days should put the trout in a bit happier mood and we could see some olives hatching in the later afternoon and into evening.
The entire mid week looks more than pleasant with temperatures in the high 60s to low 70s. Even more important we will see lows at night near 50 degrees!
Terrestrials are the main menu item, and we have started to see a smattering of olives hatching later in the day. A beetle with an olive emerger the last couple of hours of the day has been fantastic!
