Fishing Report

Mostly cloudy, then gradually becoming sunny, with a high near 81. Calm wind becoming northwest 5 to 7 mph in the afternoon.
The good fishing continues thanks to some favorable temperatures! Creeks are clear and a bit low, but temperatures have remained fairly stable in the upper and middle sections. They are running normally summer warm (probably not a good idea to fish them) in the lower sections.
We are seeing rising fish very early and very late (think 5-9) to lighter colored mayflies and midges. The rest of the day we are doing well fishing terrestrials with bead heads tied below them. This is prime terrestrial time in the Driftless!

Creeks are low and clear with temperatures in the low 60s to mid 60s.
Fishing has been very good on terrestrials lately, especially in the mornings when water temperatures are the coldest. A few streams are getting warm enough to avoid fishing on. Remember to use your thermometer often! Anything above 65 is going to be slower fishing and much warmer than that can be lethal to trout.
Weather and temperature wise, we are heading into a really nice holiday weekend with temps in the high 70s and low 80s. The sun will be the limiting factor so make sure you fish when the sun is off the water and try to find some shade.
Small hopper and beetles as an edible indicator with a bead head below is the way to go. Our true hatches have faded but there are still some craneflies, lighter colored mayflies, and egg laying caddis around in the early morning and late evening.

Weather is still good, water temperatures are still quite good for summer, and the trout are happy.
Early morning fish are rising to midges and some mayflies. About 9 a.m. switching over to a terrestrial on the surface with a bead head below is excellent. The last part of the day fishing a missing link in amber, or CDC and Elk has been incredible1
The key is finding shade. Fish early, fish late and avoid the mid day sun and you will have far more success. Do not be afraid to fish into the dark, while you might miss dinner, the fishing is usually worth it in the summertime!

Creeks are clear to slightly stained and are in the low 60s. Only the lower sections of creeks are a bit warm pushing into the mid 60s.
A few rising fish very early and very late to a mix of smaller light colored mayflies, caddis and craneflies. Otherwise we are in full on summer mode where ants, beetles, and even small grasshoppers are working well. Tying a bead head below dropper style is a simple and very effective way to catch fish all summer long.
Focus on water right below the riffles on the lip of the pools. Fish congregate there in the morning and later afternoon. On sunny days they will retreat to shade and undercut banks mid day.

Following a quick and heavy rain, we are already starting to see some creeks clearing. Most everything is murky (there is fishable water out there this morning….) but with the dry ground and the very fast nature of the rain storm we should be in good shape quicker than expected. Focus on the smaller creeks with less agriculture on them to find the clearest waters. We will keep you updated throughout the weekend.

Ugly hot again today. Fish early, check temps and find the shade.

We’re forecasted to get some light rain showers through the day tomorrow starting around 4 am. So far, it is not forecasted as anything other than light rain and drizzle with a half to a quarter of an inch through the entire day (spread over 12 hours). We don’t have a crystal ball and things can change, but overall we are not concerned about the weather tomorrow for our creeks! Things are very dry and the ground will be able to absorb quite a bit of the rain. As long as it doesn’t become a brief and heavy storm all will be good and even favorable tomorrow.

The better news is that it gets quite cool early next week!

Fish are eating small parachutes and rusty spinners in the mornings, switching to terrestrials with droppers during mid day, and then to some lighter colored mayflies and egg laying caddis in the evenings. Do not forget craneflies, they are not as heavy as the past few seasons, but fish are still eating them well through the day.

Hot and sunny the next couple of days.
Creeks are clear and flowing with temperatures in the lower to mid 60s. It is definitely time to use your thermometer after a hot week. Anything over 65 can be poor fishing, and much warmer than that it can actually start to be harmful to trout.
Terrestrial time is here. Fishing a beetle or small hopper with a bead head below is deadly all day long. For the ‘match the hatch’ fishing we are seeing fish rising to small mayfles in the early morning and later evening.
We’re in the summer rhythm right now meaning your best fishing is very early, very late and avoiding the mid day sun.

Creeks are clear and low with temperatures still in the low 60s. After a couple of incredibly hot days we do expect the water temps to drop a bit with more normal weather. (Next week looks great!)
Fish early, fish late, find shade and avoid the mid day sun. Guides have been having success on ants and beetles and even a few small hoppers on the surface during the day! Very early and very late we are seeing some small, pmd or cahill colored (green-ish to white) mayflies coming off and fish feeding on them.
Subsurface fishing has been good below the riffles on thinner bodied bugs like perdigons and food.

A 40 percent chance of showers and thunderstorms, mainly between 3pm and 5pm. Mostly sunny, with a high near 93. Heat index values as high as 101. Southwest wind 7 to 14 mph. New rainfall amounts of less than a tenth of an inch, except higher amounts possible in thunderstorms.
Very hot and humid again today. The second day in a row of hot temperatures has the creeks unseasonably warm. While there are decent water temperatures to be found, it is probably a good idea to sit today out. Either that or fish 5-9 in the morning and evening making sure you use your thermometer. Anything over 65 will be poor fishing.
Keep your fingers crossed that the rains hit as that will instantly cool things down.
The good news, is that we are looking at more stable temperatures the rest of the week and back to a bit cooler over the weekend and into next week!

This heat will slow things down a bit as bright sun, clear skies, and rising water temperatures are not the trout’s favorite. It is about time to use a thermometer. Anything over 65 will be slow fishing and much higher than that, can be deadly to trout.
Thankfully it is only a day or two of punishing heat, after that it will be warm, but just a bit more than normal for late spring/early summer.
The only silver lining to the heat is that we should start seeing more grasshoppers out there! The past week we have started to see juvenile hoppers on the banks.
