April 1st Fishing Report

Showers, mainly after 11am. High near 41. East wind 13 to 15 mph, with gusts as high as 24 mph. Chance of precipitation is 80%. New precipitation amounts between a tenth and quarter of an inch possible.
Creeks are still very low and clear, but the cloud cover has helped fish feel more comfortable. There was a decent olive hatch on many of our creeks yesterday with fish rising mid day until late afternoon (and eating subsurface on nymphs and emergers!) We expect the same going forward for a few days.
There have also been reports of caddis showing up here and there already!
Fishing has been best in and below the riffles on bead heads (thin bodied, dark colors) then switching to dries and emergers if the hatch comes off and fish start rising.

March 29th Fishing Report

Partly sunny, with a high near 54. Southeast wind 9 to 14 mph.
Creeks are extremely low and clear with temperatures in the mid to high 40s. After the cold snap earlier in the week things have normalized temperature wise. This also means we are seeing more olives hatching mid day along with midges.
We’re still having success with small streamers and leeches as well as scuds and perdigons fished right below the riffles and into the pools.

March 26th Fishing Report

A chance of rain before 3pm, then snow likely. Cloudy, with a temperature falling to around 30 by 5pm. Breezy, with a west wind 9 to 16 mph, with gusts as high as 26 mph. Chance of precipitation is 70%. Total daytime snow accumulation of less than a half inch possible.
The snow that fell the past couple of days is almost completely gone, absorbed by the ground.
Creeks are clear to very slightly stained with temperatures in the low to mid 40s. We’re still in winter/spring fishing mode where the trout are not super active until mid day when temperatures warm up just a touch.
Some midges and olives are hatching mid day getting pods of fish to look up here and there, but the best fishing is subsurface on scuds, caddis, and leeches.

March 25th Fishing Report

Rain, mainly after 11am. High near 51. Breezy, with a southeast wind 9 to 17 mph, with gusts as high as 25 mph. Chance of precipitation is 90%. New precipitation amounts between a tenth and quarter of an inch possible.
Yesterday saw a bit over an inch of heavy snow falling, excellent news for the creeks and springs. We need MUCH more, but yesterday’s dump added to potential rains today are great news for the Driftless.
So far creeks are still in perfect shape (the ground is dry enough to absorb most of the melting), and the cloud cover has fish feeling happy. Subsurface fishing is still best as water temperatures have not hit the 50 degree mark quite yet. Temps are stuck in the mid to high 40s.
Watch for some olives and midges mid day, otherwise fishing a scud, leech, or sparkle donkey subsurface has been key.

March 22nd Fishing Report

A 40 percent chance of snow, mainly before 10am. Cloudy, with a high near 37. Light and variable wind becoming north 8 to 13 mph in the morning. Total daytime snow accumulation of less than one inch possible.
There was about half an inch of snow last night. Every little bit helps right now! The streets are pretty much clear now, just be careful parking on the side of the road.
The next few days will be chilly, but with some cloud cover which should put the fish in a much better mood. The creeks remain very low and clear. We’re supposed to get more snow (hopefully!!) Sunday night and Monday morning.
Olives and midges are hatching mid day with pockets of fish rising area wide. Subsurface fishing is good on leeches and rain drops fished in the skinny broken water.

March 21st Fishing Report

Cloudy, with a high near 36. Light and variable wind becoming south around 5 mph in the afternoon.
Creeks clear and low…. fishing is average… BUT, we are supposed to actually get some snow tonight (and again Sunday/Monday!) This is some much needed moisture for the area, and we hope it dumps heavily overnight! We will keep you posted. The snow should not do anything to mess up fishing or the creeks as the ground is so dry that most of it, when it melts, should be absorbed right away.

March 19th Fishing Report

Mostly sunny, with a high near 50. Breezy, with a northwest wind 14 to 22 mph, with gusts as high as 31 mph.
Nothing major has changed. Our creeks are still very low and clear and fishing is difficult due to spooky fish. We are due for some much needed snow on Thursday!
Sparse olive hatches mid day, and subsurface fishing on unweighted pheasant tails, rain drops, and leeches.

March 18th Fishing Report

A chance of flurries before 10am. Cloudy early, then gradual clearing, with a high near 35. North wind 7 to 13 mph becoming west in the afternoon.
Creeks are very low and clear with water temperatures in the mid to high 40s. Things are still very difficult out there with how low and clear things are. Make sure to focus on the broken, riffle water and watch for olives in the early afternoon.
We’re hoping that some of the forecasted snow later this week materializes. It will do nothing to mess up the creeks, and the moisture is needed!
Leeches and scuds as well as smaller thin bodied bugs subsurface all day. A sporadic olive hatch mid day is showing up on the sunnier days as well.

March 15th Fishing Report

Sunny, with a high near 54. North wind 6 to 13 mph becoming west in the afternoon.
Creeks are low and clear with temperatures in the mid to high 40s. We had some rain yesterday, but not nearly enough to change the flows or clarity of our waters.
Things are still difficult out there, but getting better thanks to more olives showing up mid day and into the afternoon.
Subsurface fishing has been solid in the riffles and broken water (trout can’t see you as well with chop on the water!) with scuds, pink squirrels and leech patterns.

March 13th Fishing Report

Mostly sunny, with a high near 63. East wind 7 to 10 mph.
Looking at the forecast, today is blowing in some much needed rain. Creeks are very low and clear with temperatures in the mid to high 40s.
The rains tonight will unfortunately not be enough to flush the creeks, but will go a long way into starting up the fishery and hopefully putting some more water into the springs.
Fishing has been good during a mid day window as we are seeing some olives and midges hatching. The window can be brief, and the fish are still spooky everywhere but in the broken riffle water, but if the hatch shows up they get a little less spooky!
Make sure you approach with stealth, and make your casts count.
