March 12th Fishing Report

Mostly sunny, with a high near 69. Southwest wind 10 to 13 mph, with gusts as high as 22 mph.
The water is still frustratingly low, and the sun high in the sky… BUT, with the warmer temperatures we seem to have hit the winter to spring transition a bit (unfortunately it looks like it will cool down after the weekend). The warmer weather has the blue winged olives out and fish rising in the mid to late afternoon on many of our creeks. We will not call it the hatch yet, but it is pretty close….
Overall creeks are very low and clear with temperatures in the mid to higher 40s.

March 11th Fishing Report

Mostly sunny, with a high near 66. Southwest wind 6 to 13 mph, with gusts as high as 21 mph.
Decent temperatures mid morning through the afternoon to be outside! The fishing is still just ok, but starting to pick up a bit with the water temperature creeping upwards towards the high 40s.
Overall creeks are clear and VERY low with temperatures in the mid 40s. A few midges are still hatching, and we are seeing more olives around. Nothing we would call the hatch yet, but more and more showing up every day.
The best fishing is still with scuds and flashy nymphs as well as black leeches below the riffles.
Our creeks need water to continue to fish well. Even on the overcast and misty days the fishing is far better, but we are on almost 3 years of low water conditions. Because of the lower flows and clear water, the fish are extremely spooky, so approach every spot with as much stealth as you can!

Remember, we have our guest speaker from Argentina in town this Wednesday March 13th here in Viroqua talking about fly fishing and non fly fishing opportunities in Argentina from 4-5:45 p.m.

March 7th Fishing Report

Mostly sunny, with a high near 53. Calm wind becoming southeast 5 to 8 mph in the morning.
Fishing continues to be very difficult due to low water and sunny skies. Fish are responding to leeches and nymphs in the riffles, and are super spooky pretty much everywhere else. Some sparse midge hatches mid day are around, and we are still waiting for some warmer water to see the olives in any decent numbers.
We’re due for some (much needed!) light rain tonight and tomorrow. The predicted totals are not nearly enough to mess things up, and the cloud cover and drizzle will only benefit fishing!

March 5th Fishing Report

Sunny, with a high near 49. Northeast wind 6 to 10 mph.
We had a nice light rain yesterday with some areas getting a quarter of an inch of rain. While this is no where near enough to bring creeks up to normal flows, any precipitation is good right now!
Creeks reamin very low and super clear (which means spooky fish) with temperatures in the low to middle 40s area wide.
We’re having the most success fishing the riffles and broken water or slowly crawling leeches and scuds at the bottom of deeper pools.

March 4th Fishing Report

Showers likely, then showers and possibly a thunderstorm after noon. Some of the storms could produce small hail. High near 49. Light northeast wind becoming north 9 to 14 mph in the morning. Winds could gust as high as 26 mph. Chance of precipitation is 80%. New rainfall amounts between a quarter and half of an inch possible.
Stuck is the word right now. Creeks have been the same flow, same temperature, and same clarity for almost a month now. Still chilly enough (temps in the low 40s) that trout are not really all that happy, and hatches are sparse except for an hour or two during the day.
Not only do we need the rain (things are super low already this season), it may get things moving if it actually falls throughout the day.
Midges are still the main hatch. While we have seen some olives in the later afternoon, it is not anything we would call a hatch yet….
Leeches and scuds are still the hot flies.

March 2nd Fishing Report

Sunny, with a high near 61. South wind 5 to 15 mph, with gusts as high as 24 mph.
Creeks are very low and clear with temperatures in the low to mid 40s.
Overall fishing is still pretty good. It hasn’t really kicked in yet, but the weather has been more than pleasant to be outside in! Lately fish have been pretty happy in the riffles, even starting to eat smaller terrestrials (check out the new skater tot fly!!) we are using as indicators.
Subsurface fishing has been best on smaller streamers and leeches as well as scuds and midge larvae.
We are sounding like a broken record, but some cloud cover and rain could be a game changer for the area!

March 1st Fishing Report

Sunny, with a high near 51. Breezy, with a south wind 8 to 17 mph, with gusts as high as 26 mph.
Creeks are very low and clear, we are in dire need of some moisture. Water temperatures are in the low to mid 40s area wide.
The weather this weekend looks very nice to be outside. Don’t expect too much from the fishing. The low water and bright skies are making things very difficult out there! That coupled with the water temperature being stuck in the 40s means things are decent, but not crazy good out there condition wise.
We are seeing some midges and winter stones still, but what we are waiting for is the water temperature to hit about 50 and trigger spring stoneflies and olives (as well as scuds!).

February 29th Fishing Report

Sunny, with a high near 48. Breezy, with a south wind 11 to 16 mph increasing to 17 to 22 mph in the afternoon. Winds could gust as high as 31 mph.
Yesterday’s chill was brutal, but things are starting to warm up on land, and under the surface of the water.
As the water starts warming up watch for more fish activity, especially mid day. We haven’t hit the magic 50 degrees yet (olives, stonefliy hatch etc) but are still seeing pods of fish feeding on midges and winter stoneflies on the surface.
Subsurface scuds, leeches and streamers have been the way to fish. A large scud with a small, thin bodied bug below has been excellent right below the riffles.
Creeks are very low and clear, and fish are spooky. Approach the water with caution!

February 28th Fishing Report

Sunny, with a high near 21. Wind chill values as low as -9. Blustery, with a west wind 15 to 20 mph, with gusts as high as 30 mph.
Today and tomorrow are pretty much no goes for fishing. Cold and windy. Temperatures stabilize on Friday with a high near 53, and Saturday in the 60s. Weird, weird weather…
Creeks are very low and clear and fish are extremely spooky. Water temperatures have not gotten warm enough for olives and spring stones yet, we are still seeing midges and winter stoneflies though mid day, and fish are loving streamers and leeches fished slowly below the riffles.
