Fishing Report

Patchy fog before 8am. Otherwise, sunny, with a high near 81. North wind around 6 mph.
We’re still stuck in an endless summer and have been since April. Very low precipitation (Fennimore area creeks received some good rains over the weekend) in our neighborhood mean our creeks remain very low and clear. Thankfully the weather is a bit mellow this week with every day but Thursday predicted to be in the low 80s with overnights in the low 60s.
Morning is key to good fishing right now. Get up early, fish like crazy until about 10, then take a break and a siesta. The last couple hours of the evening and into night can be good too. Summertime is never a great time for driftless trout fishing, but if you get up a little early, you can still enjoy fish rising to tricos and eating terrestrials on the surface as well as bit of action subsurface in the riffles on zebra midges and purdygons.

ADDITION: The fishing this morning after the rains was actually really solid as reported by our guides and anglers. Some creeks bumped flows up just a bit (they dropped back down by mid day) but the fish responded and were happy. It looks like we could get some rain again tonight and we expect that things will be solid again tomorrow!

HOT again today. Just don’t fish, it isn’t worth it to stress yourself of the trout right now. We did get some rain last night which unfortunately did nothing for the creeks, but is helping to slowly catch us up on moisture.
Tonight we are supposed to get a storm again. We’re hoping for some heavy rain, even a gully washer. We need the creeks to get a flush and we need a lot of water to get things back to normal!
Tricos in the mornings, switching to terrestrials. Take a break mid day and enjoy a siesta, then head out in the evening to fish terrestrials, caddis and mice!

Some quick rain showers this morning have put humidity into the air, that plus the warmer air temperatures means we will see high 90s for air temperatures the next couple of days. Friday cools down a bit, and the weekend is forecasted for highs barely touching 80 degrees!
Skip today and tomorrow and keep your powder dry for the weekend (we might even get some rain on Friday). If you are in town, make sure to fish early in the morning and skip the heat later in the day for the health of both the trout and you.

Creeks are still very low, clear, and weedy. Temperatures will start to creep up this week. Please be sure to use your thermometer! Anything over 65 should be avoided.
Tricos in the mornings, switching to ants, beetles, and hoppers in the later morning. Mid day is too hot to fish, and on the coolest creeks you can catch a few trout in the evening on caddis and the same hopper/dropper setup.

Today is the coolest day until the weekend. Highs will be in the high 80s to mid 90s this week with a cool down and potential rain on Friday. Mornings have still been ok, but the lack of water is making this season quite difficult! Make sure you watch water temperatures this week and avoid anything over 65. If you are fishing, focus on headwater creeks and springs and fish early in the morning, take a mid day break, and either do not fish in the evenings, or wait until the sun goes down to get back out there.
Tricos in the mornings, then ants and beetles and hoppers until about 11. Where it is possible, a small thin bodied dropper will be effective fished in the riffles.

Pretty much area wide we finally got a decent rain. Anywhere from 1/4 to 1 inch fell last night, in some valleys it was a bit more concentrated and heavy. A mini flush happened on a few creeks! Fishing today should be pretty good.

The bad news is next week we get a summer warm up. Temperatures in the high 80s to low 90s.

Not much has changed since we have had no rain. The temperatures have been very pleasant in the mornings to be outside and even into the weekend the overnight lows will not hit 60 degrees.
From sunup to about 11 fishing can be decent on terrestrials and tricos as well as simple emergers (pearl butt secret is great right now!). Where the aquatic vegetation is not too thick, a small scud or purple drank will get fish to eat. If a bead head will not work, an unweighted pheasant tail or soft hackle as a dropper is a great option too.

Creeks are exceptionally low and clear with temperatures in the high 50s to mid 60s. We do have some creeks with temperatures over 65 and up to the 70s. While the fish are not boiling in these creeks (they hang out near the springs sipping the cool water), fishing for them is potentially fatal and just not responsible. Please use your thermometer.
Overall fishing is difficult due to the low water and high aquatic vegetation growth. Luckily the temperatures have been stable and morning fishing still remains good. Mid day and afternoon are not quite as good unless there is cloud cover. The evening bite is good for a couple hours after the sun goes down below the ridges.
Beetles, ants, smaller hoppers are all good on the surface. Where you can effectively nymph, smaller and thin bodied bugs are good.

The weather this week is quite nice for summertime! Creeks, for the most part, are still flowing with a decent temperature, but they are still very low and weed choked. Some to the point that they are dry fly only!
A few tricos in the morning, then small training wheels (especially purple royal and cricket colors!) and beetles throughout the day have been effective. In the spots you can nymph effectively, purdygons and purple drank are doing well.

Creeks are still very low and clear, some recent rains have had a small positive impact, but we are in need of more water.
The weather is looking quite nice for this week with highs barely touching the low 80s and over nights in the high 50s. Fishing isn’t great, but the weather is very angler friendly right now.

Morning fishing has been solid with fish eating a few trico spinners and smaller ants and beetles on the surface. Subsurface has been good with the normal purdtgons, zebras and brush hogs. Afternoons have been ok on small hoppers with a short dropper, but only when we have some decent cloud cover. The last couple hours of the day when the sun is off the water and mousing and streamers into the night have caught fish too.
