July 9th Fishing Report

Mostly sunny, with a high near 82. North wind 3 to 5 mph.
Fishing has been quite fun from sunup until about 10! Creeks are clear with spooky fish, but temperatures continue to stay favorable in the mornings. We still encourage you to use your thermometer. Anything over 65 degrees is going to be slow fishing and much warmer can be lethal to trout.
We’re finding some rising fish early with a simple parachute adams in smaller sizes or a midge dry working to fool the feeding fish. Otherwise, the standard summer rig of a beetle or other foam indicator pattern with a bead head below is quite good.
The evenings have been spotty, but we are still getting some fish to eat craneflies, caddis, or seam sippers in the riffles the last couple hours of the day.

Summer hours are here!

With the summer weather upon us, we are going to our summer hours. We do this to encourage you to get out early and fish! The fishing is solid most summer long from sunup until about 9 a.m. on hopper or beetle/dropper and we will see trico spinners in the near future early in the morning.

Fishing can get good again the last 2-3 hours of the day. So fish early, restock at the shop mid day and take a break, then head out again in the evenings.

July 7th Fishing Report

Patchy fog before 8am. Otherwise, mostly sunny, with a high near 82. Southeast wind around 5 mph becoming calm in the morning.
Creeks are clear to slightly stained. We did get some rains over the weekend which will help keep water temperatures down a bit. Overall expect them to be in the low to mid 60s. So far, we have a normal summertime. It doesn’t look to be getting extremely hot this week thankfully.
Temperature is key right now. Fishing over 65 degrees will be slow, and much warmer than that things can be lethal to trout. Fishing is best first thing in the morning until about 10. After that, a mid day break and checking creeks and temperatures the last couple hours of the day.
. The menu is ants, beetles, hippie stompers and other foam indicator patterns with thin bodied bead heads tied below. In the evenings, simple parachutes or seam sippers will work to cover most anything hatching.

July 3-6 Fishing Report/Forecast

It’s summer in the Driftless, which means getting up at dawn and trout fishing like crazy until about 10 or 11 when things start getting warm.

We have been fortunate enough to have some decent water temperatures for this time of year. The smaller, headwater creeks are still right around 60 degrees. Only the big waters have hit the mid 60 mark consistently.

With the warmup heading into the weekend things will slow down a bit, however Saturday (night especially) we are supposed to get a summer rain shower that will cool things down and put some cold water into the system (hopefully). Focus on Sunday morning for the best fishing according to the weather forecast.

It’s foam and dropper time here. Fish a beetle, hippie stomper, or other foam terrestrial with a bead head below all day long. There are some sparse hatches in the last couple hours of daylight. Nothing a parachute or simple caddis imitation can’t match well.

Mousing has been good, as have medium sized streamers at night.

July 2nd Fishing Report

Mostly sunny, with a high near 84. West wind 3 to 8 mph.
. Overall creeks are clear to slightly stained with good water temperatures for the summertime. Please continue to use your thermometer as fishing is poor once temps hit the mid 60s.
Beetles and chubby Chernobyls with a dropper all day long. Parachute Adams or parachute purple in the evenings.

July 1st Fishing Report

Sunny, with a high near 82. Northwest wind 5 to 10 mph.
Creeks have dropped and cleared quickly with more streams flowing clear to slightly stained. Only a couple of waters and the lower sections of larger creeks are murky still. Temperatures are pretty good for summer with most creeks in the low 60s, but continue to use your thermometer! Anything over 65 will be slow fishing and much higher than that you are at risk of killing fish!
Terrestrials with a dropper are the main way to prospect for trout right now. Focus on the riffles and shaded undercut banks. The last hour or two of sunlight we do have some rising fish. A parachute adams, or cranefly should do the trick to get them to eat. We like to fish two dries. Our beetle up front, and our parachute behind.

June 30th Fishing Report

A slight chance of showers and thunderstorms before 4pm, then a slight chance of showers and thunderstorms after 5pm. Patchy fog before 9am. Otherwise, partly sunny, with a high near 82. Light west wind increasing to 5 to 10 mph in the morning. Chance of precipitation is 20%.
Cloudy and humid start to the day. The clouds will break up a bit later on. We’re in summer mode which means fishing as early as possible to take advantage of shade and cooler water temperatures. While things are not too hot yet, we are still recommending that you use your thermometer often. Anything over 65 will be slow fishing, and much warmer you can be harming trout.
Creeks are stained to muddy today after another great summer shower last night. Anywhere from half to an inch fell area wide. It hit pretty consistently throughout the area (much more rain fell in the Fennimore area). That means you will have to put a couple extra miles on your drive time to find the stained to clear water out there!
. A good day for San Juan worms, leeches, and large scuds.

June 28th Fishing Report

A 20 percent chance of showers and thunderstorms after 10am. Partly sunny, with a high near 84. Light southeast wind becoming south 6 to 11 mph in the morning.
Creeks are clearing up nicely, We have quite a few creeks that are clear, lots that still have a bit of a stain, and only a couple that are murky/muddy still.
. The sun today will not do us any favors. Fish early, fish late, and chase the shade for happier fish. Thanks to the recent rains, water temps are good on most of our creeks. It is still a good idea to use your thermometer as once the water temps start rising, it can cause fish to slow down their feeding.
. Most of the action is in the riffles and seams right below the riffles. Fishing an attractor terrestrial with a bead head below is effective all day long. Trout will come up to dries early in the morning and the evening when the sun is off the water.

June 27th Fishing Report

Scattered showers before 7am. Patchy fog before 8am. Otherwise, mostly cloudy, with a high near 75. West wind 8 to 10 mph. Chance of precipitation is 40%. New precipitation amounts of less than a tenth of an inch possible.
. Well, we were a bit wrong. The ground was thirstier than we anticipated and we do have quite a bit of fishable water, from crystal clear to slightly stained. Yes, there are some creeks that are chocolate milk, but there are also some small to medium sized creeks that are crystal clear out there! These summer flushes are typically excellent for fishing. Chase the stained water to find the happiest fish.
Creeks will continue to drop and clear throughout the weekend with the only predicted rains coming on Sunday evening.
Scuds, leeches, and worms on the murky water. Squirrels, scuds, and princelings on the stained water, thin bodied, flashy nymphs on the clear waters.
On the surface, the weather has messed with hatches a bit, so beetles and foam fly indicators have been good, with ants doing well on the clear creeks. For hatches, the lighter colored mayflies have slowed down a bit with the changing weather, but the parachute Adams and parachute purple hatch is going strong!

June 26th Fishing Report

Scattered showers and thunderstorms, mainly after 2pm. Some of the storms could produce heavy rainfall. Partly sunny, with a high near 83. South wind 6 to 10 mph, with gusts as high as 18 mph. Chance of precipitation is 40%. New rainfall amounts between 1 and 2 inches possible.
We were hopefully as the rains held off a bit more than we anticipated South of town, but we are going to get more today. While there will be a small percentage of water that is fishable today, it looks like a bust overall until tomorrow or Saturday.
THE SILVER LINING: We really needed this rain. To have some water finally soak in and have at least some of that water get into the groundwater to recharge the springs is incredible news for what was setting up to be another dry summer. While we are not out of the weeds yet in terms of low water, this is a great step forward.
