Hot week ahead. Not good trout weather.

A 20 percent chance of showers after 1pm. Mostly sunny, with a high near 91. Heat index values as high as 97. Southwest wind around 8 mph.

The dog days of summer have returned.  Hot and humid pretty much all week long this week.  While there will be some trout fishing early in the morning, this would be a good week to chase bass or panfish instead!

August 28th Fishing Report

Sunny, with a high near 84. Calm wind becoming west around 5 mph in the afternoon.

Very vanilla day weather wise today.  Again, the bright sun will slow things down earlier in the morning than we would like.

However….  Saturday and Sunday we are looking at some cloud cover and drizzle!  This should help the fishing out quite a bit.  While the match the hatch dry fly fishing will slow down if it rains, the beetle or hopper/dropper fishing will be quite good, as well fishing small leeches.

Water temps are great on almost every creek except the larger area streams.  Fishing is still best in the mornings, but it can be stretched out a bit longer if clouds stay in the sky.

August 27th Fishing Report

Too sunny.

Weather is actually quite pleasant for the summertime, but low and clear water with bright, sunny skies is making it extremely rough out there.

We’re looking forward to the clouds this weekend!

August 26th Fishing Report

A 20 percent chance of showers after 3pm. Mostly sunny, with a high near 80. Northwest wind 6 to 13 mph, with gusts as high as 22 mph.

Solid summer weather out there.  It’s still summer which means fishing super early, before the creeks warm up and the sun shines brightly on the water, but temperatures have been very good for this time of year.

Watch for some spinners early, then fish a ground beetle with a bead head of some sort below it.  Don’t neglect a micro leech as a dropper.  Fish have seen thousands of perdigons, changing the dropper up just a bit can make a big difference.

August 25th Fishing Report

Mostly sunny, with a high near 82. Southwest wind 6 to 13 mph.

Creeks are low and clear with decent water temperatures for later August.  The weather is very consistent all week with nothing much going on until some forecasted clouds on Saturday.  We’re still locked into morning fishing being the best, with a few extra minutes after the sun gets higher in the sky as the grasshoppers move around.  What shuts things down right now isn’t necessarily water temperature, but more sunlight hitting the water.

August 21st Fishing Report

A 30 percent chance of showers and thunderstorms, mainly before 9am. Partly sunny, with a high near 82. Southwest wind around 10 mph becoming west in the afternoon.

Creeks are clear and summer low.  There are only so many ways to change a consistent report.  Tricos, terrestrials, skitter some caddis in the evenings etc.

The main point to keep in mind is overnight temperatures have been VERY friendly for summertime.  This is making morning fishing quite fun, and comfortable.  If we get some cloud cover that helps a ton too.

Overall this is a pretty solid stretch of morning, summertime trout fishing with a bit of activity the last hour or two of the day on the cooler creeks.

August 19th Fishing Report

Areas of fog before 8am. Otherwise, mostly sunny, with a high near 78. Calm wind becoming north around 5 mph in the afternoon.

About a half an inch of rain hit from VIroqua north yesterday.  A nice dump of heavy rain that will stain a couple creeks up this morning, but overall clarity is very good area wide.

Temperatures are good for summertime, and will get better the next couple days as overnight temperatures will be in the mid 50s tonight and a couple more nights later this week.

The menu has not changed.  A few Tricos in the morning, followed by terrestrials with a dropper, then a mid day shut down (unless there are clouds, then things will continue to fish) and some rising fish at night (large parachute adams, or Medusa).

While the fishing is not on fire, it is still enjoyable to be out there on cooler summer mornings!

August 18th Fishing Report

A chance of showers, with thunderstorms also possible after 1pm. Mostly cloudy, with a high near 78. West wind around 8 mph. Chance of precipitation is 40%. New rainfall amounts between a tenth and quarter of an inch, except higher amounts possible in thunderstorms.

Cooler weather and some potential rain blowing in this afternoon.  Outside of the larger creeks (West Fork, Bad Axe watershed), everything is in pretty good shape temperature wise for the dog days of summer!  We are really hoping for more rain and cloud cover.

Right now, shade is key.  Fish as early as possible watching for fish sipping midges and tricos, avoid the mid day sun, and head out again late in the evening near last light.  Twitching some CDC and Elk caddis or the medusa caddis has been effective.

Otherwise, to prospect, fish a large beetle pattern or training wheel with a dark, flashy bead head below.  Finding overhanging vegetation, even if it is just a couple blades of grass, is key to finding fish.  Trout are also tucked up below undercut banks most of the day.

August 17th Fishing Report

Sunny, with a high near 81. Calm wind becoming northwest around 6 mph in the afternoon.

A pretty solid summer week ahead with high temps barely pushing 80, and after tonight, the lows will be consistently sub 60.

It is still summer, so please keep in mind that fishing mid day is not recommended.  We are still getting some creeks with water temperatures higher than 65 which means very poor fishing.  Keep using that thermometer!

It’s terrestrial time.  While there are still a few tricos in the morning, the main fishing is with a larger beetle or small grasshopper with a dropper below.  Nothing wrong fishing a training wheel and a brush hog all day long!

Shade is key.  If you fish when and where the sun is off the water, you will catch more fish.
