Fishing Report

Cloudy, with a high near 28. South wind around 9 mph, with gusts as high as 18 mph.
Of course it is decent weather today and tomorrow and once season opens a cold front moves in….
Saturday’s high is 9 degrees. It will be too cold to head out and fish until a few days after opener. The general rule of thumb is that you will have decent fishing (remember it is winter fishing in Wisconsin!) on a day that is at least 25 degrees and sunny or 35 degrees and cloudy.
You have to fish rising water temperature in the winter for success. It typically does not matter what the base temperature is, as long as things warm up a bit the midges and winter stoneflies will become active for a short window of time mid day (as will the trout). The minute the water temperature starts to drop, things shut off.
So, watch the weather forecast, and use your thermometer while you are fishing in the winter!
Keep an eye out for shop hour updates. We will be open by appointment (e-mail do not call as we have a few hosted trips still going on this winter) and limited hours on weekends when the weather is decent!

Wisconsin’s trout season is closed. Catch and release opens up the first Saturday in January.

There is fishing in Iowa and the state parks of Minnesota in the off season. Please double check regulations and if you head out now to fish be wary of spawning fish! Leave the spawners alone and focus on the pools below.

We will resume reports in January, and will go back to 7 days a week on March 1st.

Scattered sprinkles before 11am. Cloudy through mid morning, then gradual clearing, with a high near 58. Light west wind increasing to 5 to 10 mph in the afternoon.

Inland trout season in Wisconsin closes after today. That means no more fishing in the Wisconsin Driftless until the first Saturday in January. We’re closing at noon today then will take a couple of days off before updating shop hours etc.

Partly sunny, then gradually becoming sunny, with a high near 61. West wind 7 to 10 mph, with gusts as high as 20 mph.

Season wraps up after tomorrow (Friday October 15th). The creeks are in great shape and the fishing has been quite good for the last week of season! Hopper dropper is still the go to rig, but nymphing with heavy thin bodied bead heads and scuds has also been very effective.
In the later afternoon we are seeing some fish rising to olives as well. The hatch is still a bit spotty, but if you are on the right creek at the right time, it is a lot of surface feeding fun!
Shop is open all day today, and on Friday we will be open 8-noon.

Wisconsin’s season runs through October 15th. After this Friday it closes until the first Saturday in January.

Fishing remains solid thanks to the cloud cover and light rains the past two days. Over the last 24 hours our area received about half an inch average. There were only one or two small spots that got an inch of rain, and most of it fell lightly on and off all day yesterday. In other words, our creeks are in perfect condition. Clear to slightly stained.

With the cooler temperatures, fishing has been a touch slow to get moving in the morning. While you can catch fish on nymphs crawled along the bottom early in the morning, things seem to be ‘waking up’ around 10 or 11.

We’re still fishing a hopper/dropper through the day using scuds and pink squirrels early, then after lunch swapping to thin bodied nymphs to mimic the blue winged olive nymphs.

Later in the afternoon, conditions are right to see an olive hatch. It has been spotty and sporadic, but where the bugs are hatching, fishing has been fantastic on klinkhammers and film stars!

Showers likely, then showers and possibly a thunderstorm after 1pm. High near 59. Calm wind becoming northeast around 6 mph in the afternoon. Chance of precipitation is 80%. New rainfall amounts between a quarter and half of an inch possible.
SEASON ENDS AFTER THE 15TH. THAT IS THIS FRIDAY!

Creeks are clear and a bit low (normal for this time of year) with good temperatures right around 60. The rains today should not produce anything heavy that will blow the creeks out except in a couple of rare cases. We will keep you posted.
Scuds under hoppers will continue to be strong when the clouds are in the sky. Leeches and streamers will also be solid under these conditions.
Fishing a small olive mayfly (film star!) in the later afternoon is also very effective as we are seeing olives hatch almost daily at this point.

Widespread dense fog, mainly before 11am. Otherwise, cloudy, then gradually becoming mostly sunny, with a high near 76. Calm wind becoming southeast 5 to 9 mph in the morning.
Creeks are in good shape and fishing is solid.
Just remember it will be very crowded out there. Please respect other anglers and do not hop in upstream of someone fishing! If you arrive at a spot and there is a car, the general rule of etiquette if you can not check in with the angler(s) is to move to the next spot!
Also, keep landowners in mind. Don’t block roads, gates, field access roads etc. Please respect private property and make sure you are fishing public lands if you do not have permission.
