January 28th Fishing Report

Mostly sunny, with a high near 47. Breezy, with a southwest wind 11 to 16 mph becoming south 20 to 25 mph in the afternoon. Winds could gust as high as 44 mph.
The unseasonably warm week rolls on. We’re looking at temperatures around 40-50 through Friday. While it is still winter fishing, it will be a good week to take a day off and enjoy being outside.
The shelf ice on the creeks is slowly melting away, and we have zero snow on the banks (which is not good long term, but helps a lot right now in getting around easily!)
Creeks are still chilly, so focus your fishing mid day. Midges (potential hatch mid day), leeches and scuds are all effective right now.

January 24th Fishing Report

A 40 percent chance of snow, mainly after 4pm. Increasing clouds, with a high near 21. Wind chill values as low as -14. South wind 7 to 14 mph, with gusts as high as 28 mph. Little or no snow accumulation expected.
Most creeks are pretty locked up with shelf ice still. The warming over the next few days should open things up, and within a couple of days we should see some hatches and feeding fish again!
Creeks are very low and clear, and fish are very spooky. Approach with stealth!
Midges are hatching mid day, but your best bet is a small leech or bead head fished deep in the pools or below the riffles mid day.

January 22nd Fishing Update

We will be open Saturday from 10-2 for you! Lots of new stuff, and cold weather clothing is in this week.

Coming out of a bitter, brutal cold spell with temperatures still cold to chilly until the weekend. Add to that some nice wind, and we have conditions that should encourage you to stay inside…

Saturday the high is 30 degrees, and even though there is some wind, we are calling it a mental health day. Not necessarily worth it to drive far to come here and fish, but if you are nearby or going crazy, it could be a decent day for fly fishing the winter season.

We still have little to no snow on the ground, so getting around is easy, and we do not have to worry about afternoon melting on the sunnier days slowing fishing down. While this will be a problem longer term (the lack of snow), it is good to take advantage of now.

January 4th Fishing Week Report

Sunny, with a high near 13. Wind chill values as low as -14. Northwest wind 6 to 10 mph, with gusts as high as 20 mph.

Creeks are low and super clear, with temperatures in the mid 30s.

Cod and party sunny all week long. Nothing too exciting in terms of a day to pick to go fishing yet. Maybe Wednesday or Friday which are forecasted to be sunny and about a high of 20.

Ideally we want sunny and warm-ish (at least 25 degrees). In the winter, the sunny days area almost always better as they warm the water temperatures up faster and get the midges and winter stoneflies moving a bit.

As of now there is zero snow on the banks, so getting around is easier than normal.

Early Catch and Release Season Opens Saturday!

Saturday marks the opening of the early Catch and Release trout season in WIsconsin.

Creeks are extremely low and clear and water temperatures will be in the mid 30s. Saturday’s forecast is calling for sunny and 16. Not very good, and not at all worth travelling for unless you need to get away and be outside for a while.

Normally we prefer air temps to be about 25 with sunny skies or 35 with clouds for winter fishing. If you are out there, use a thermometer and make sure you are fishing between 10-2 when water temperatures are climbing.

Gift giving made easy. Open Saturday.

Things feel chaotic out there, and many people are tired of the holidays already.

We’re not going to bombard you with special deals or limited time specials.

This holiday season we are offering a simple gift idea for Driftless Anglers. A large mug (20 oz) to hold your favorite beverage, a comfortable t-shirt, and a gift card to use at any time in the shop.

We are open on Saturdays during the off season (10-2) or by appointment. We just got a delivery of our locally made pink squirrel and gnome pottery, and a restock of logo shirts and hats.

Saturday hours start this weekend!

The past few days have seen some light rain falling in the area. We will take any moisture we can as we slipped back into abnormally dry status late in the season. We’re all hoping for a good snowfall this winter.

Trout are happily enjoying their time off. They are in full spawn mode now and we have even seen some pretty happy fish feeding on midges in the afternoons on some creeks.

Remember Wisconsin’s trout season is CLOSED until the first Saturday in January.

We’ve restocked with logo hoodies, hats, shirts etc for the shopping season, and we have some of the new 50th anniversary Scott Rods in stock (but going quickly!)
