Fishing Report

Rain and thunderstorms likely, then rain and possibly a thunderstorm after 2pm. High near 59. Southeast wind 8 to 14 mph becoming east in the afternoon. Winds could gust as high as 23 mph. Chance of precipitation is 90%. New rainfall amounts between a quarter and half of an inch possible.
We’re not really sure what to make of the weather forecast. We are supposed to get some precipitation, but it is all over the board of what might, or might not happen. While we need the moisture, we just do not want it to all fall at once. Keep an eye on the report and social media as we will keep you updated as best as possible if anything bad happens.
As of now, creeks are clear and a bit low. It has been drizzling early this morning, but just enough to wet the pavement.
Fishing has been really fun lately with fish rising almost all day long to midges and olives with a few black caddis showing up as well. In addition to the surface fishing, scuds and flashy nymphs have been excellent fished in the riffles. We prefer to fish them behind a size 16 foam fly in darker color to imitate our spring stoneflies.

Looking forward, we are forecasted for some rain tomorrow and possible snow Friday night. If the rain does not come all at once, then everything will be just fine. The ground is still very dry and can absorb a lot of moisture right now.
Creeks are clear and low with temperatures in the high 30s to mid 40s. Fish have been in a great mood lately rising almost all day long. Since the creeks are so clear, they are super spooky in the flat pools, but the broken riffle water and just below the riffles they are much easier to catch right now.
Midges and olives are hatching, with a few caddis showing up as well. From time to time we are spotting some spring stoneflies too.
A size 16 chubby chernobyl (brown or olive) with a bead head below is great when the fish are not rising.
Leeches and smaller streamers are great right now too with trout acting very grabby lately.

Mostly cloudy through mid morning, then gradual clearing, with a high near 33. Northwest wind 8 to 14 mph, with gusts as high as 22 mph.
Tomorrow’s weather is back to the high 40s, this is a brief low this week.
Fishing has been quite good in the later morning thorough the evening. Fish are rising to midges and olives with a few caddis already showing up. We have also started to see some spring stoneflies.
Overall creeks are clear and a bit low, which means fish are spooky. Water temps are right around 40 degrees which is the magic temperature for early spring.

Sunny, with a high near 43. Light and variable wind becoming west 8 to 13 mph in the morning.
The early mornings have been starting out slowly with things picking up right around noon for the most part. Water temperatures have to hit that magical 40 degree mark for the creeks to wake up now. When they do, we are seeing fish rising to midges and olives until about 5:30!
Fishing a foam fly with a dropper is always a good bet until you see trout rising, and leeches have been fantastic at enticing sluggish trout out from their hiding holes.
Creeks are clear and a bit low with temperatures in the high 30s to low 40s.

Mostly sunny, with a high near 47. Calm wind becoming north around 6 mph in the afternoon.
Snow is gone from the banks, water temperatures are at 40 degrees or warmer, olives are showing up here and there…. It’s springtime in the Driftless!
Overall, creeks are clear and flowing a bit low. Fish are responding very well to leeches and smaller streamers. Nymphs are working well in the broken water and riffles as the flat, glassy water means very spooky fish right now.
Watch for fish rising in the riffles and runs just below throughout the day. It will be midges or olives primarily, but there have been some very early black caddis spotted.

Cloudy, then gradually becoming mostly sunny, with a high near 45. Northwest wind 11 to 15 mph.
Creeks are clear and flowing well with temperatures in the low 40s. There is not enough snow, or high enough temperatures to make melting water an issue. We had rising fish to 5:30 and beyond last night.
Yesterday was the first day we can say that we actually saw spring olives hatching in numbers. While hatches are never guaranteed, the conditions are just about perfect for some olives to hatch the next few days!

Sunny, with a high near 49. East wind 3 to 8 mph.
Creeks are clear to slightly stained with water temps right around 40 degrees. Most of the bankside snow is gone which means we do not worry as much about snow melt dropping water temperatures until later in the day. We’re at the tipping point and excellent spring fishing could happen any day now.
Hatches have been good with some midges still around, but a touch warmer and we will start to see olives and spring stoneflies!
Subsurface fishing has been good on thin bodied bugs like perditions, as well as scuds and pink squirrels. When in doubt, the leech fishing has been fantastic lately, with some larger fish eating leeches fished right below the riffles.
Saturday and Sunday are forecasted to be about 44 and cloudy, stable weather is excellent this time of year!

Some snow fell yesterday but nothing major. This will be more water into the springs. Overall the fields are clear of any real snow and the shaded areas still have some snowpack.
Creeks are clear and a bit low with temperatures in the high 30s or low 40s.
Midges are still hatching, and we have seen some olives and even some black caddis on the creeks! Things are just about to pop and start springtime in the Driftless in a big way!

Creeks are mostly clear but will see some stain later in the day due to snowmelt.
Temperatures are in the high 30s to low 40s.
Creeks have held up very well with runoff only hitting much later in the day. Overall things are quite good now with fish feeding subsurface on midge larvae, pearl jams, and pink squirrels.
On the surface we are seeing midges and winter stoneflies, and at any moment we could start seeing some olives hatching!

A very warm springlike week ahead. We do not have a ton of snow left on the banks, but what is left will melt over the next couple of days. Make sure you use your thermometer and if the temperature of the creek is dropping, it is time to move on.
On some of the shaded slopes there is still quite a bit of snow and that can muddy things up if it starts melting rapidly. You are usually better off on open, meadow creeks that have less snow on them.
We are still in midge and winter stonefly hatch time, but with the warmer weather we are starting the blue winged olive watch. Once the water temps hit 40 we should start to see them appearing.
