October 12th Fishing Report

Showers and possibly a thunderstorm before 10am, then showers between 10am and 1pm. High near 62. Breezy, with a southwest wind 15 to 18 mph becoming northwest in the afternoon. Winds could gust as high as 33 mph. Chance of precipitation is 100%. New precipitation amounts between a quarter and half of an inch possible.
Sporadic rains through the area this morning with some local heavy showers. It doesn’t look like it will mess up the fishing in any way, but having a backup plan is not a bad idea.
If the clouds stick around look to be fishing more scuds and pink squirrels subsurface. If not, use spanish bullets, perdigons or other slim bodied bugs.
On the surface, the foam hatch has been good all day long (hippie stompers/training wheels etc). and we have seen olives in the later afternoon/evenings.

We have had MANY reports of anglers trespassing. Yes, it is crowded out there being the last few days of season, but there is ZERO reason and no excuse for trespassing. If you are unsure whether the land is public, and you can’t find a landowner DO NOT FISH THERE. There is plenty of public and well marked water in our area to fish.

October 10th Fishing Report

Sunny, with a high near 67. Calm wind becoming north 5 to 9 mph in the morning.
Not much has changed out there. It is still foam attractor or hopper with a bead head below all day long. Add to that a chance at seeing fish rising to olives (size 18-20) in the later afternoon and evening.
Creeks are clear and the fish are spooky. Find some shade and approach with caution and stealth.
These are the last few days of season and there are a lot of anglers out there taking advantage of the good fishing and great weather. Please be courteous! If there is a car at an access point and you can not check in with the angler, drive to another spot. Do not hop upstream of another angler. And take extra care to respect private property.

October 9th Fishing Report

Mostly sunny, with a high near 80. Breezy, with a southwest wind 7 to 12 mph increasing to 16 to 21 mph in the afternoon. Winds could gust as high as 33 mph.
It’s in the last week of season. Every day is a perfect day to fish!
Creeks are clear and running late season low. Temperatures are in the low 50s.
We’re seeing olives in the evening when the sun comes off the water, and fishing terrestrials and attractors tied below all day long. Nothing too fancy or special this time of year.
The sun is your limiting factor right now, try to find shade or avoid the mid day sun for the best fishing.
Larger fish are starting to eat streamers and leeches. Again, fishing dawn and dusk is your best shot at hooking some larger fish!

October 8th Fishing Report

Sunny, with a high near 66. North wind around 5 mph becoming calm in the morning.
The sun has been a blessing and a curse. While it is very pleasant to be out there, the sun has made fish very spooky and slowed down the olive hatch a bit.
Terrestrials/foam with a dropper through the day and looking for fish rising to olives in the later afternoon/evenings.
Creeks are clear with temperatures in the high 40s to low 50s.

Our area continues to see an increase of COVID cases. Please keep social distancing in mind and be safe out there!

October 6th Fishing Report

Sunny, with a high near 69. West wind 5 to 14 mph, with gusts as high as 24 mph.
Creeks are clear and flowing a bit low with temperatures in the high 40s to low 50s.
The sun is not doing anglers any favors. It is more pleasant to be outside, but it is making the fishing more difficult than cloudy conditions.
It is worth waiting a bit until the creek temperatures bump up a degree or two. The fishing picks up as temperatures creep up a bit.
With the bright sun in the sky and crystal clear water, the fish are spooky. Fish broken water and find shade to find happier fish. A nymph drifted just down from the riffles is key in the mornings. Afternoons give us a bit better terrestrial bite (hopper dropper). Evenings we are still seeing olive hatches but the fish tend to be a bit more reluctant to rise. Fish smaller mayflies on finer tippet if you run into refusals.
The leech and streamer bite has cooled down a bit too. Wait for the sun to be off the water a bit and it will pay off.

Season ends soon! Wisconsin’s trout season goes through the 15th of this month (no fishing starting the 16th). Get out there and fish!

With the end of the season on us, we are seeing quite a few anglers out there. Please pay extra attention to the water you are on, do not trespass or block driveways/fields when you park. Remember that we fish friendly here. Do not crowd other anglers, if there is a car at an access spot drive to the next spot. Never hop upstream of another angler, you are effectively cutting off their fishing and ruining their day!

COVID 19: Cases of Covid are on the increase in Wisconsin and our little corner of the world. Be cautious and stay away from other humans. While fly fishing is, by nature, socially distant be careful when in towns, at the gas station etc.

October 5th Fishing Report

Sunny, with a high near 62. Breezy, with a south wind 8 to 13 mph increasing to 18 to 23 mph in the afternoon. Winds could gust as high as 32 mph.
Breezy day today blowing in a warmer high pressure system. While this might slow down the olive hatch a bit (we still have a good chance of seeing them in the late afternoon and evening), it will bring the terrestrial and foam bite back on track!
It still isn’t worth getting up early if the night time temperatures are below 40. Sleep an extra hour, have an extra cup of coffee then head out and fish. When the water temperature climbs a degree or two, the fishing picks up.
Nymphing in the morning is the way to go. Either tight line, under an indicator, or below a hippie stomper. Focus more heavily on a dropper below a terrestrial mid day as once the ground warms up and the dew disappears ants, beetles, and hoppers will become active.
Watch for the olive hatch in the later afternoon and evening. It could be a bit lesser and the fish a bit more hesitant to rise in the bright sun, but still make sure you have some olives in your fly box!

October 2nd Fishing Report

Creeks are clear and flowing a touch low with temperatures in the low 50s.
With the cooler nights, it is not necessary to get out early. Fishing picks up at a slow pace and peaks later in the day with the olives in the late afternoon/evening. Watch for the olive hatch around 4.
During the day we are fishing an attractor/terrestrial on the surface (hippie stomper, training wheel) with a bead head below it. In the afternoon if fish aren’t rising to olives, you can still get them to eat soft hackles swung downstream.

COVID 19 UPDATES: Wisconsin is experiencing an alarming increase in virus cases. Even in Vernon county we are seeing 8-10 cases a day instead of the 1 or two previously. While things are not shutting down yet, we advise a bit more caution. If possible avoid other humans as much as possible (easy to do when fishing!) and try to be indoors as little as possible. At the shop we are continuing to clean and disinfect surfaces, as well as requiring use of the hand sanitizing station at the front door and masks. We may have to limit the number of people in the shop to 3 if it starts to get very busy so please be patient if there is a line up!

October 1st Fishing Report

A chance of showers, with thunderstorms also possible after 1pm. Mostly cloudy, with a high near 52. Northwest wind 11 to 15 mph, with gusts as high as 23 mph. Chance of precipitation is 40%. New rainfall amounts of less than a tenth of an inch, except higher amounts possible in thunderstorms.
The weather has been miserable for humans but good for fish lately. The cooler and cloudy weather has fish in a pretty good mood and we are seeing olive hatches in the latter part of the day. There has not been much rain at all and the creeks remain clear.
Subsurface fishing has been good on scuds, leeches, and pink squirrels. As long as the clouds stay in the sky these larger and thicker bodied bugs will work. As the skies clear, grab some spanish bullets, or zebra midges. Trout are more likely to eat thinner bodied patterns when the sun is on the water.
On the surface, hippie stompers are still on the top of the list as an indicator terrestrial. Fish are eating them sporadically throughout the day and they make a great indicator for a bead head tied on below them.

September 30th Fishing Report

A slight chance of showers, then a chance of showers and thunderstorms after 8am. Mostly cloudy, with a high near 59. Breezy, with a northwest wind 6 to 11 mph increasing to 15 to 20 mph in the afternoon. Winds could gust as high as 33 mph. Chance of precipitation is 40%. New rainfall amounts of less than a tenth of an inch, except higher amounts possible in thunderstorms.
Creeks are clear and a touch low with temperatures near 50. Cooler days and chilly nights have the fishing pushed back a bit. This means you do not have to get out there early to enjoy the best fishing, sleeping in is ok!
The rains this morning are mostly north of us on the I-90 corridor. Expect some scattered drizzle early. The winds will dry things quickly and get some terretrials blowing into the creeks.
Today feel like a scud and streamer day. Scuds are far more active in this type of weather.
The gusty winds could ‘blow away’ the olive hatch making rising fish less abundant and harder to fish. Throwing a leech or streamer in this situation makes life a lot easier as you do not need pinpoint accuracy!

September 29th Fishing Report

A chance of sprinkles before 10am, then a chance of showers after 11am. Mostly cloudy, with a high near 58. West wind 5 to 10 mph, with gusts as high as 18 mph. Chance of precipitation is 40%. New precipitation amounts of less than a tenth of an inch possible.
With the cooler temperatures and cloudy weather, we have started to see more olives hatching in the afternoon and into the evening. The terrestrial fishing is slower, however fishing a large indicator pattern (hippie stomper, training wheel) with a bead head below is still working very well.
The leech and streamer bite is on too with fish eating meat sweats and milwaukee leeches well.
We really could not ask for better fishing conditions, and it looks like this weather will hold through Monday!
