Creeks are very low and clear (we need rain badly!) and the fish are quite spooky. Look for shaded areas and for fish to be sitting in the shallow riffles and underneath banks right now. Fishing early and late and skipping the high mid day sun is also a good idea!
Caddis and craneflies are around, and fish are responding to them skittered in the riffle water. We have started to see some sulphurs and cahills but it isn’t what we would consider a ‘hatch’ yet. They will appear in numbers soon….
Subsurface has been better on thin bodied bugs due to the clear water and clear skies. Food, purdygons, zebra midges etc.
Mostly sunny, with a high near 76. South wind 3 to 8 mph. Creeks are very clear and low for this time of year. The dry fly fishing has been slow because of the conditions. Subsurface fishing in the riffles and broken water as well as deeper pools has been solid still. We are seeing some caddis and cranes, but not enough risers the past couple of days to get excited. We are watching the evening time as sulfurs have started to make an appearance. Subsurface fishing below a beetle or hippie stomper is the way to go through most of the day.
Sunny, with a high near 72. West wind around 7 mph. Creeks are low and clear. Caddis and cranes are hatching and we are starting to see some sulfurs in the evening.
Most of all, it has been very crowded out there. We ask everyone to please make sure to check in with other anglers before fishing a spot. There is still enough room to spread out. If the spot you wanted to fish has a car on it, head to another spot. Even break out the map and explore a different valley!
There is no reason to hop in upstream of another angler (high hole) and fish. If you can see the angler(s), please walk down to them and check in before you fish.
When you park at a public access point, it is very helpful if you leave a note on your dashboard indicating which way you went!

Partly sunny, with a high near 59. Northwest wind 10 to 15 mph, with gusts as high as 24 mph. Creeks are low and clear with temperatures in the mid to high 50s. Today is the last mild weather day, the weekend will be warmer and sunnier. While this is helping the caddis hatch, it is making mid day fishing difficult! Focus on early and late fishing for the best results. Caddis and craneflies are the main menu item but we should start to see some lighter colored mayflies soon with the warmer weather.
A 30 percent chance of showers and thunderstorms, mainly after 5pm. Partly sunny, with a high near 74. South wind 9 to 14 mph, with gusts as high as 23 mph. Creeks are low and clear with temperatures in the mid to high 50s. The haze from the fires out west is keeping things a bit overcast (as will the weather rolling in). Right now the fishing is being held back by the sunny weather, so we will take any break we can! Caddis are in full swing, fish are eating mostly lighter colored bugs, but a few will still be selective on darker body colors. If you are seeing caddis rises and not seeing any bugs they are eating craneflies! Skittering or twitching a cranefly right now can be deadly on the surface. During the day when fish are not rising, beetles with a dropper have been great. The smaller terrestrials have been producing, and subsurface fishing in the riffles and just below has been fantastic!
Sunny, with a high near 76. Light northwest wind increasing to 6 to 11 mph in the morning. Creeks are clear and low. The sun had fishing a bit more difficult yesterday than normal. Fishing was the best in the shaded areas, and in the broken riffles. Hatches came off late in the day and were much more sparse than the past few days. Today’s sun and high pressure system is similar to yesterday so hopefully a bit more ‘stable’ weather has things back on track. We are seeing caddisflies and craneflies daily. And while it is still too soon to get excited about, we have started to see a sulphur or two. As the water temperature warms a bit and the days get a bit longer, watch for them hatching in the evenings. Subsurface fishing has been solid on euro squirrels, brush hogs, and hot spot pheasant tails. Streamers and leeches have been good, but typically only morning and evening when the sun is off the water.

When the snow is blowing and temperatures are frigid at home, we travel to northern Patagonia to warm up and fish on the storied rivers and lakes of Argentina. Each year we run into some great dry fishing with afternoon hatches and fish looking up for attractors and even terrestrials!
From day floats or walk and wade trips, to fishing the lakes during the dragonfly hatch (watching huge fish smash big dries is an experience you shouldn’t miss), to overnight glamping, this trip will give you the full taste of fishing Patagonia.
You will stay in private casitas (each angler gets their own room) and have coffee delivered to you each morning. You can watch fish rise in the spring pond and look out at the Lanin volcano off in the distance while you get ready for the fishing day.
After breakfast, your guide will pick you up at the lodge in the morning and take you out to your fishing destination for the day.
After the day ends you are returned to the lodge and will enjoy some of the finest local cuisine and wines prepared by the trained, professional chefs on staff. Expect to come home a couple pounds heavier after enjoying the excellent food and wine!
Part of the week of fishing includes a two day, overnight camping float. You float into your high end campground at the end of the day and are handed appetizers and offered something from the bar table. The hard working staff has everything set up and food cooking before you arrive. Each angler gets their own tent with a comfortable mattress on a cot and sleeping bag. There is a shower tent, bathroom tent, dining tent, and some of the best campfire food you will ever have!
We travel this time of the year to take advantage of the dragonfly hatch on the lakes. Casting from the boat into the crystal clear glacial lakes and watching huge trout come up to crush your large dry fly is a day not to be missed. Without fail, when people first come on the trip they hesitate to fish the lakes as they don’t see it as being like fishing moving water. After they get back from their lake experience, they are ready to fish the lakes again the next day.

Mostly sunny, with a high near 69. Northeast wind around 6 mph becoming northwest in the afternoon. Creeks are clear to slightly stained with temperatures in the high 50s. Recent rains did very little to put some color on the water. Everything is very clear to a slight stain. With the sunny and high pressure weather, we expect to see caddis (mostly tan) and craneflies hatching. Watch for splashy, aggressive rise forms and you know fish are eating the caddis! We have also been very successful on midge dries when fish are sipping on the surface. Subsurface fishing has been best on purdygons and thinner bodied bugs until the afternoon when thicker nymphs like purple drank and euro squirrels are working well.
A 20 percent chance of showers before 11am. Mostly cloudy, with a high near 71. East wind 9 to 15 mph, with gusts as high as 24 mph. Creeks are clear to slightly stained. The rains yesterday were not nearly enough to muddy anything up. With the cloud cover, fish were responding better to mayfly patterns (film star) twitched in the smoother runs below the riffles as well as still eating caddis on the surface in the broken water of the riffles. Subsurface fishing was decent on pretty much everything. Expect fish to respond well to leeches and streamers throughout the day today along with bead heads.
Showers likely, mainly before 11am. Cloudy, with a high near 72. Light east wind increasing to 5 to 10 mph in the morning. Winds could gust as high as 20 mph. Chance of precipitation is 60%. New precipitation amounts of less than a tenth of an inch possible.
Clouds and drizzle to light rain in the morning should have trout in a much better mood today and into the weekend. While the fishing has been great the past few days, the combination of crystal clear water and sunny skies had trout a bit spookier than we like. Now that we have some cloud cover, we expect even happier fish out there!
Caddis are still the top thing on the menu right now, with craneflies a close second. With the clouds, we should see more mayflies and midges hatching too. Remember, sipping rises are midges or mayflies and the splashy rises are caddis or cranes.
Subsurface fishing has been great in the riffles with pretty much anything. Clouds mean scuds. If you are no sure what to tie on, start with a scud if clouds are in the sky.
The dream weather should make the leech and streamer fishing much better this weekend too!
