The predicted snow missed us completely. We were hoping for more moisture on the banks, but on the bright side of things, fishing should be easy through the weekend!

Shop closed today (Thursday) and open Friday from 8-noon and Saturday 9-2

Today is very windy, the hatch never materialized in a big way on most creeks yesterday because of the wind, and we expect that to be the case again today. If you find a sheltered run, you can find dry fly action. Otherwise, nymphing was great yesterday with a smaller, flashy bug.
Tonight will be very cold (-1 with windchill) and tomorrow sunny buy chillier (high in the mid 20s). Saturday looks like 38 and sunny with Sunday 40 and partly cloudy! This looks like a weekend to get out of the house and visit the Driftless!

Midges, both subsurface and surface are the main item on the menu right now. Scuds have also been very successful. Do not hesitate to slow twitch a leech below the riffles as some bigger fish are looking for a large meal right now!

Cloudy through mid morning, then gradual clearing, with a temperature rising to near 35 by noon, then falling to around 29 during the remainder of the day. West wind 10 to 15 mph, with gusts as high as 28 mph.
Not too shabby for winter conditions. There is a little snow on the banks (not nearly enough to refill the springs and creeks for the spring, but we will worry about that a bit later). The wind is pretty heavy today, but only in gusts.
Fishing was decent mid day yesterday and should continue to be so through Thursday. We get snow and a cool down again Thursday afternoon.
Fish are feeding on midges and smaller scuds subsurface, and we have seen some pockets of rising fish mid day on the warmer creeks.
It is ESSENTIAL to use a thermometer right now. You will be successful when fishing rising water temperatures. Once the temps stop rising or cool down (snowmelt on warmer days, the sun coming off the water on cooler days) fishing shuts down.

Ok, it is still winter fishing, but as some colder days start wearing on the mental wellness, it might be time to get outside and cast a fly rod. This week will have temperatures in the high 30s and cooling back down below freezing at night. This gives us our window of opportunity mid day to have some potentially good winter fishing!
Watch for midges hatching mid day as fish will rise to them happily if they are around. Otherwise, fish small and dark bodied nymphs below the riffles and drop leech patterns into deep holes.
The key to successful winter fishing is making sure you are fishing a rising water temperature. If the water temp is climbing, fishing will be good. Once it gets cold (sun goes away or snowmelt starts trickling into the system) fishing shuts down completely.

While on paper Saturday looks ok, the windchill will be brutal. Things look better on Sunday.

Medicore weather week ahead. 29/30/29/25/30 for highs this week. Cloudy and snow on and off most of the week. Nothing really special weather wise to get excited about. The weekend is even worse with a high of 17 on Saturday and 12 on Sunday.

In the winter we get excited for 25 and full sun or 35 and clouds. Anything else really isn’t worth travelling to far for. If you are in the area, absolutely take advantage of a chance to get outside, and if you are suffering from crazy boredom and cabin fever absolutely enjoy a mid day outside. Just don’t expect too much from the fishery when things are this cold.

Creeks are low and clear and flowing at normal chilly winter temperatures. The weather forecast for the next few days (highs in the mid to high 20s) is not fantastic and nothing to travel too far for, unless you are going stir crazy and simply need to get out of the house!

If you are fishing, concentrate on the middle part of the day when water temperatures are climbing.

6 inches or more of snow fell throughout our area. This was excellent, heavy and moisture laden snow which will go a long way in refilling our springs and creeks.
The next few days are in the mid to high 20s, not exactly the best fishing conditions especially without the sun shining on the water and warming things up.
