January 27th Fishing Update

A 20 percent chance of snow before 11am. Mostly cloudy, with a temperature rising to near 26 by 11am, then falling to around 17 during the remainder of the day. Blustery, with a northwest wind 5 to 10 mph increasing to 13 to 18 mph in the afternoon.
Phantom warm up this morning, but quickly going back to too cold to fish.
Creeks are showing some shelf ice after the past couple of days of sub zero temperatures. It has been bitterly cold and will take a while for that ice to melt off and for creeks to get into fishable shape again. The good news is that a tiny bit of a warm up comes this weekend (mid 20s). If the sun peeks out it can melt the snow and set up for some good fishing early next week (temps in the low 30s). It all depends on how much of the shelf ice melts between now and early next week. We will keep you postd.
Shop is open Satuday 9-2

It’s cold out there!

Partly sunny, with a high near 8. Wind chill values as low as -19. Blustery, with a northwest wind 16 to 21 mph, with gusts as high as 37 mph.

All week long highs without windchill barely top 20 degrees. Time to tie flies and clean fly lines!

January 11th Fishing Update

Mostly sunny, with a high near 29. Wind chill values as low as -17. South wind 10 to 15 mph becoming southwest in the afternoon. Winds could gust as high as 29 mph.
After a chilly week last week there are more angler friendly temperatures ahead. Nothing to get too excited or drive a long distance for yet unless you really need to get out of the house.
A small snow system is moving into the area today, but the forecast is not calling for any major snows between now and the weekend.
Midges are hatching mid day, and trout are also eating nymphs rolled along the bottom as well as leeches dead drifted over the lips of pools.

January 4th Fishing Report

Increasing clouds, with a high near 30. Breezy, with a south wind 8 to 16 mph, with gusts as high as 28 mph.
Today will be decent out on the water, but still not quite prime. There are a few midges hatching and fish fed for a little bit mid day, but nothing to get too excited about.
There is a cold snap coming in until Saturday. Doesn’t look like tolerable weather until the weekend at this point.
Shop will be open Saturday 9-2.

January 1st Fishing Report

Happy New Year and season opener!

A 20 percent chance of snow after 4pm. Cloudy, with a high near 9. Wind chill values as low as -10. North wind 5 to 15 mph, with gusts as high as 23 mph.

What a bummer of an opener. Cold and high wind chill, it isn’t worth it to fish as it will sink, and the fish will be harmed if they are taken out of the water.

Things turn around again around Tuesday looking at the forecast.

Remember in the winter you are looking for at least 25 degrees and sunny or 35 degrees and cloudy for the best fishing. Anything colder than that and you will enjoy being outside, but do not expect good fishing.

During January and February the shop is open very limited hours and by appointment. Please e-mail the shop or message us via WhatsApp (608-637-8779) to set up an appointment. On weekends where the weather isn’t horrible we will be open as well.

Season Opens Jan 1. But it will be cold!

Cloudy, with a high near 28. South wind around 9 mph, with gusts as high as 18 mph.
Of course it is decent weather today and tomorrow and once season opens a cold front moves in….
Saturday’s high is 9 degrees. It will be too cold to head out and fish until a few days after opener. The general rule of thumb is that you will have decent fishing (remember it is winter fishing in Wisconsin!) on a day that is at least 25 degrees and sunny or 35 degrees and cloudy.
You have to fish rising water temperature in the winter for success. It typically does not matter what the base temperature is, as long as things warm up a bit the midges and winter stoneflies will become active for a short window of time mid day (as will the trout). The minute the water temperature starts to drop, things shut off.
So, watch the weather forecast, and use your thermometer while you are fishing in the winter!
Keep an eye out for shop hour updates. We will be open by appointment (e-mail do not call as we have a few hosted trips still going on this winter) and limited hours on weekends when the weather is decent!
