CALL TO ACTION. EMAIL BEFORE MONDAY.

Email your opposition to two large CAFOs trying to come into Crawford County.

dtroester@co.crawford.wi.gov

The county to the south of us is taking comments this weekend (get them in ASAP) on the proposed siting of TWO major pig farms. The company behind it is skirting the laws by splitting their operation into two sites with one animal below the limit for extra oversight on BOTH sites. Shady moves that keep them from extra oversight on what is a mega factory farm. That alone should put a hold on their applications and invite some sort of scrutiny instead of a rubber-stamp by the county.

The impacts of these factory farms is well documented and will be yet another major blow to the air, water, soil, community and infrastructure of Crawford County. Please email the county and let them know that yet another mega farm polluting our area is not in the their best interests. Highlight how far you travel to fish these waters, and let them know that their turning from Crawford County to CAFO county means you will look elsewhere to spend your time and money!

Our impact as anglers and silent sport tourists has gone unnoticed for too long!

Out of area company ruining our area for their profit yet again….

October 10th Fishing Report

Mostly cloudy through mid morning, then gradual clearing, with a high near 70. South wind 6 to 13 mph becoming northwest in the afternoon. Winds could gust as high as 21 mph.
Inland trout season closes after the 15th of October, get out there and fish!
. Creeks remain clear and a touch low (the rain last night was onl 1/4 of an inch) with great temperatures. The clear water has made fishing very difficult as trout are incredibly spooky right now! Fish early, fish late, and chase shaded areas or broken water for the most success.
. A small grasshopper, beetle, or cricket with a thin bodied bead head below is key right now all day long. We are seeing some fish rising to olives and caddis near the end of the day too.
This is historically a very busy weekend, so please make sure to remember angling/access etiquette! If there is another car at the spot make sure you check in with any other anglers before hopping on the water. Everyone fishes in an upstream direction, so don’t head upstream of another angler and cut them off! Please also remember not to block gates, access roads, fords, or anywhere else farm equipment or people need to access their property.

October 9th Fishing Report

Sunny, with a high near 67. South wind 5 to 10 mph.
Because, as anglers, we will always find something to complain about… The water temperatures are in excellent shape in the lower to mid 50s. We’re excited about that. The bright sun and crystal clear water are making things VERY difficult out there. Fish are very spooky right now, so make sure you approach with as much stealth as possible and fish broken, choppy water and find shade wherever you can. Get those flies as close to the undercut banks as possible! Trout are not moving too far into the bright sun to eat bugs right now.
. Hopper/dropper during the day, olives and caddis in the evenings.

October 8th Fishing Report

Sunny, with a high near 61. Light east wind.
Creeks are low and clear with temperatures in the low to mid 50s. The bright sun is making fish spooky, so be as stealthy as possible and focus on the broken water and shade (overhanging vegetation, undercut banks etc)
. Smaller hoppers and beetles with bead heads are catching fish all day long. It was cold last night, so getting out there a bit later and letting the water warm up is key. In the later part of the day we are seeing sporadic hatches of olives and caddis too.
Streamers, leeches, and mice are solid… But, not when the sun is high in the sky. Fish these at dusk and into dark.

October 7th Fishing Report

Increasing clouds, with a high near 67. Light northwest wind increasing to 5 to 10 mph in the morning.
.Creeks are clear and still a bit low with temperatures in the mid 50s. Overnight temperatures have been quite chilly (there is a frost advisory tonight!)
Fishing is back on track with this fall weather. Nymphing below an indicator early (don’t be afraid to use some larger, size 12-ish, nymphs, or even balance leeches) then switching to a foam fly with a bead head below after the sun warms and dries the grass a bit.
We’re anticipating the later afternoon hatches to show up with this weather as well. Mostly smaller olives (size 18-20) and some caddis (16 tan to brown).

October 6th Fishing Report

Showers likely, mainly after 3pm. Cloudy, with a high near 58. North wind around 7 mph. Chance of precipitation is 60%. New precipitation amounts between a tenth and quarter of an inch possible.
Finally! The heat wave is over and great temperatures for the rest of the season. Weather is a 100% go from here through the 15th. (Remember Wisconsin trout season closes completely after the 15th of October)
. We did get about 1/2 inch of rain area wide which will not do anything significant to the creeks mud/stain wise.
. The only risk is that today is such a large shock to the fish that they are a bit fussy early on.
. Watch for olives and a few caddis hatching in the afternoon. other wise fish an edible indicator (hopper, beetle, foam thing…) with a bead head below.

October 4th Fishing Report

Sunny, with a high near 87. Breezy, with a south wind 7 to 12 mph increasing to 16 to 21 mph in the afternoon. Winds could gust as high as 30 mph.
Creeks are low and clear with temperatures in the higher 50s to 60 degrees.
. This is the last heat we should see for a while this weekend. Today and tomorrow will be warmer and sunny as a cold front blows in Sunday night. Unfortunately this makes fishing pretty slow.
Fish really early when the sun is off the water and the wind is a bit more mellow. Avoid the mid day sun and heat, and chase trout again the last couple hours of the day.
. Hopper dropper all day long and watch for rising fish early and later in the day. Smaller mayflies and skittered caddis will work when fish are rising.

Next week’s weather looks great!

October 3rd Fishing Report

Sunny, with a high near 88. Southwest wind 5 to 8 mph.
The heat is on. It will be uncomfortably warm out there this afternoon. Focus on fishing early in the day, and avoiding the later afternoon. This heat wave will end early next week.
The weekend outlook is for more heat on Saturday, than warm on Sunday. The sunny weather also means fish will be a bit spooky.
. Silver lining time. We have seen a slight return of trico spinners on some of our creeks early in the day. If no fish are rising early, fishing larger sized bead head nymphs under an indicator, then switching to hopper dropper from about 9-1.
The last hour or two of the evening could have some fish rising to olives.
Remember season closes after the 15th of this month! It can be busy this time of year, so please remember to check in with other anglers and give each other lots of space. There is a lot of water out there! Do not hop in above another angler and cut them off.
Remember not to block gates, driveways or access roads. Be careful of farm equipment out there, it’s harvest time!

September 30th Fishing Report

Partly sunny, with a high near 84. Calm wind becoming east around 5 mph.
Creeks are low and clear with temperatures inching into the higher 50s and low 60s due to warmer weather.
Fish early, fish late, and avoid the mid day sun. This is mid summer 2.0 fishing right now. The good news is that it gets back to cooler fall weather after the weekend.

The silver lining is that the terrestrial bite has been good late morning into mid day!
